I can sing while playing six string guitar and find it actually helps me to play while singing. As for bass, I can't talk in complete sentences with a natural cadence while playing. I've never quite figured out why singing is so difficult while playing bass, but of all the things I can't seem to do, that one just hasn't made it high enough on the priority list to get attention yet.

Yep, I can sing but not talk while playing piano or organ, and neither while playing bass.

Chet’s thumb and independent finger playing sounds fantastic. Timing is everything. Yes, start slow and fill the holes. One day it just clicks in and you’ve got it.

It's a little like fast bluegrass flatpicking (like Doc Watson stye) where you start slow. work on it day after day, and then all of a sudden one day you've just got it. It's almost like your brain keeps working the coordination/timing problems in between practice sessions.

In the Beatles song, I Will, the bass is hummed. If a bass player can sing the bass part better, no need to play.

I've done bass at open mikes just singing, it worked great. More fun than being stuck playing someone else's bass with speed bumps by a long shot.

That’s for sure. Two things that I find works. First is never look at your right hand, I lie on my back. Second, when not playing, I visualize the string plucking and timing. That somehow burns it into my brain. But it does take a lot of practice to get it to click.

I have an two honest questions with no hidden meaning or ulterior motive and I figured someone here would know. Does anyone know what happened to Jon (Bad Example)? I haven't heard from him in long time. Iwas also wondering what happened to TB member Stumbo who was here until quite recently.

If their absence was via a moderator decision please know that I am unaware of that and not challenging the decision or trying to start an insurrection.

I guess because I sang in the church choir, played piano starting at 7 y/o, woodwinds through jr and sr HS and the Navy, then started on bass in 67, singing and playing is almost no problem. There are a few songs with intricate bass lines that trip me up a little where the melody and off beat bass line clash. My main problem with the singing part is lack of tenor range. I have decent lows and a stupidly high falsetto(high-2 octaves above middle-C is no sweat). In between ain't happ'nin'.

Re: microphones. When I was required to sing in my last band, or at least look like I was, I got one of these:

Audix OM-5 Hypercardioid Dynamic Vocal Microphone

Made me sound like Sinatra. The other singers in the band followed suit (didn't make them sound like Frank, so I don't know what was going on, there). Yeah, more expensive than a Shure, but if you look around you may find them real close, price-wise. Mine was $120 USD.

As I recall, Jon had some health and family issues. Stumbo hasn’t been in this thread since October when he said he was semi-well. He has been on TB in November. What is interesting is that he is listed as a guest when he logs in and as a retired member. Even his avatar is gone. Not sure what that means.

When i was very young starting as a pro touring bass player, I always got gigs because I could sing a good deal of the songs. Kept me working. I learned to sing along with guitar when the Beatles came out. Only then I played my infamous sunburst red Aldens guitar. BTW Phil Lynott from Thin Lizzy couldn't play his complex bass lines while singing. He very much simplified his playing style to sing the lyrics.

He did provide a correct reply to Home Alone. Seriously, Will, you didn't watch Home Alone? Even I saw that.

Thanks for the insight.

I knew Jon was planning move and that he had mentioned health issues he needed to address. That squares with with what I heard from him in his last communication quite a while ago. I hope it's nothing more than life priorities that are keeping him away.

Stumbo's story seems almost more perplexing as I wasn't aware TB had guest sign-in or a retired status. He actually seemed quite active and then suddenly it was like the US Marshals moved him into the witness relocation program. As far as I know the Men in Black don't have him.
