I got a chance to visit the Toyota USA data center in Phoenix, AZ a little over 10 years ago. Looked a lot like that Google video, except the facility housed more than Toyota, so Toyota's servers were fenced off from the others, with an additional level of biometric access (I was only able to observe from outside the fence). The one thing I looked for, didn't see, but assume is still there in the Google setup was a halon fire suppression system. That goes off? Run. Fast! Toyota was capturing every single internal email and voice mail in addition to serving their websites. Fascinating!
Except for the Big Brother aspect.

Our climbing instructor was a mountain rescue team member. I know I listened carefully. There was the pair of roped climbers who flossed everyone else off the face on their way down, for example.

Mountains are beautiful and should be admired from places that don't require ropes and climbing.

The manufacture, import, and export of Halon was banned by the US EPA in 1994. It depletes the ozone so it is a no-no. Older systems were grandfathered in but many installations were and are being decommissioned. Alternatives include carbon dioxide and inert gas, you want to remove the oxygen in the room. Farts can't be used because they are flammable.

Dare I ask...what's the rationale?
Not willing to risk a fall even when I was 40 yrs younger and it looks too much like work. It's so much safer sticking an engine between my legs and blasting down the road at 80mph!
Actually most of my "speed" riding is 55-65.Although I did climb Pikes Peak once - on a motorcycle. This view looking north-northeast.

Wine and a selection of meats and cheeses are very good rationale for mountain watching.
One could argue that observing an event in time changes it. Placing yourself into that event can have dire consequences that extend to the surrounding environment.

Imaginary adventures have a cost too. Pleasant opium dreams become twisted. Samuel Taylor Coleridge didn't mention that part. Public transportation doesn't reach the all night laudanum dispensaries.
Besides jet engines, archivists preferred it for waterless fire suppression since it wouldn't ruin your copy of the Gutenberg Bible... or two hundred years of student records... or what have you. But as you say, everything has its costs and sometimes they're hidden.
Nigh on 20 years ago, an intern asked why there wasn't such a system installed in our server room to protect at least the VAXen that ran our park department's point of sale operations in case of a fire emergency. My coworker told him, "This is parks and recreation -- there are no emergencies."
Did my one mile walk/jog, cooled off, made a cappuccino, made two backup copies of stuff on the computer (in addition to the Norton 360 backup).
Pondered buying a new PC. This one is 8 yrs old. It's an I5-8GB but fast enough for most stuff, and never had a problem with it. Hard to justify $1200+ when there is nothing wrong with what I have. Might spend 100 bucks to double the memory to 16GB.

Sometimes formatting the drive and doing a new install along with a memory upgrade breathes a lot of new life into an older computer. BTW we are still buying i5's for some of our staff because the new i5's are more than enough power for most users who browse, word processs, Excel, and email. Time and money well spent. BTW Windows 10 has a nice backup feature built in-along with a migrate to new computer app.
