I feel for those critters. When it gets down into the sub-zeroes I just marvel how they survive with such a short coat and little to eat.

This is a lot of snow for this area. If we get any it's usually just a dusting. Last year there was none. We've had significant snow (2+ inches) about a half dozen times since we've lived here.
The DFW area is not equipped for snow or ice. The whole metroplex pretty much shuts down. The first winter we were here there was a little snow and ice. We went to work as usual since we had lived in St Louis. Got to work and the only folks who came in were the ones who had relocated from St L. Very few here know how to drive in winter conditions.
Now for something completely different...
On a previous post I had a sentence with these three words together: were here there

"GHOTI". 'GH' as in cough; 'O' as in women; 'TI' as in function=fish.
Now you know why foreigners have trouble learning English.

and Odin enjoys looking at them from his yard. There's all manner of critters out there.
What I have now is a nice Lands End that I got about 15-20 years ago. The main z-i-p-p-p-p-p-e-r has some issues so I want to get that replaced, and the outer layer has some wear from seta belt rub. My preference it to take care of the zipper but I think I still want a back up and also something not so dark (very dark Brown).
I am not young.
That's another reason for getting a new jacket. 
I had a down coat (and sleeping bag) way back when. How is it that a duck has no problem when their down gets wet?

is it "jib" like i like the cut of your jib or Giblets (since that's where -wear lol, it was derived from)
or gib like gibson.

Some people reach adulthood without ever realizing there are moronic English people.
As far as I know Giblets is pronounced jiblets. Gibson isn't pronounces Jibson unless you're my father-in-law.

...could it actually be because you've never been in the military that olive drab is a color you don't mind seeing?
Although I spent my career working in naval aviation and still like gray and navy blue (which many would try to argue is black)...good point. I guess that I will never know.
