Well, I guess 50 qualifies as old. That's when AARP starts mailing out membership apps. That was a sad day. I remember being 50. Now, I'm 60 with a bad back. Now, about those lightweight amps....

What were we talking about?

Thank you.. I was just wondering because there is a certain amp that people talk about here. It used to have a larger filter cap array.. now its about 7000uf... So i wondered if it were bumped up to about 12000 or 14000 if it would make any changes.... Ive also heard about some guy doing mods to SVTs back in the 80s by adding more filter cap capacity.. I never tried it

Chances are good there is enough build in the transformer to handle the added inrush current, it could tighten up the low end not necessarily provide more "headroom" though. 12,000 is already pretty stout.

If you want it to respond the way it was designed to, return it to stock. Filter reserve capacity can affect voicing. More modern amps take advantage of relatively cheap filter caps, in the old days it was a bigger expense and treated more "frugally".

Capacitance in the supply certainly has an impact on tonality. More capacitance equals heavier impact. It is also more expensive thanks to the not only the caps, but also all the stuff before the caps. I agree completely with everything B-String said.

FWIW, I'm an old tech. I gig a Thunderfunk when it matters.
