As we are talking vehicles, I have an '06 GMC Sierra 2500HD, 4x4, 6L with 305,000 (mostly highway) miles. Still has original brakes but the water pump and gas filler cap was replaced a few months back (wonder why). Tires replaced every 60-80,000 miles, battery replaced every 4-5 years, oil changed every 5,000 miles. Biggest expense has been gas but, now being retired, I only fill up every 3-4 months. It may out-last me....

There’s a self destruct timer in those batteries.

I was working in the attic of a house and the board I stepped onto 'teeter-tottered' because it was only nailed down in the middle, with one end on top of a joist and the other under the flange of an I-beam. In a very short time, I made the decision to land on my butt, rather than let my feet go through the plaster ceiling and straddle the joist (I though that was prudent, for several reasons). When I sat on the joist, my head snapped back and hit a rafter- it was the older type, with nice, crisp edges. I was working with another guy who was almost rendered speechless, but we went to a clinic not far away and the Dr asked if I had lost consciousness- I said "You're asking someone with a fresh head wound?". He replied "OK, fair enough".

After it was stapled, an assistant came in to clean it again and when she tipped my head down, said "Aw, did you hit your head?". I almost said "Nope- I stubbed my toe so hard it came right out the top- here's your sign".

While in the Navy in San Diego, I was in an accident(my bad). When the Navy ambulance got me to the on base hospital, the corpsman asked me if I had any internal injuries. "You tell me".

A proper restorative in retelling this short tale of money saved

What might I see on the rack but a pair of purple tights in some kind of crush velvet fabric. There's one package left, and it's marked down from ~$20 to $4. Easy snag, right?

Snag is about the size of it. What I learn is this fabric has nap, and whoever / whatever sewed these tights together got the nap backwards. IRL it means every skirt rides up. Wonder. How. I. Found. Out?

Would those tights make for good musical instrument case lining? Skirts need not apply.

I wear these hats most of the time when I'm out. I have a thing for submarines and the Nautilus and I are about the same age. After touring the Nautilus in Groton, CT, I have a whole new appreciation for what those guys do. The USS Dallas hat is from reading Tom Clancy novels.

But most important, it helps to keep our military in the public eye. I was not in the military and I tell that to people if they notice the hat and tell them why I wear it.

My '96 Aerostar got to the point I didn't trust it any more-except as a backup. I still have it. It's in my driveway with 348,090.2 miles on it. AC compressor replaced once, dryer replaced once, cruise control doesn't work. Also still have my '95 GMC Safari. It only has 268,000miles. Hate to junk it-it'd be good work van for someone. Had a buyer but he moved to Mexico. Everything works but the heater. It's in FL. Who cares 'bout the heater?
Needed something reliable w/ a warranty. 2019 Transit connect.

That's about what I used in a Chevy Vega. Never did take drain plug out of the pan, only changed the filter. Drive the 100 miles to Memphis and back to change the oil. It didn't smoke. It leaked but I don't think it was bad enough for that loss. Never did figure out where the oil went. I solved the problem by doing this:

Local place will give me $200 bucks each for them. The Aerostar is staying here in case there's a problem with the TC that puts it in the shop. I still need transportation. I've got a possible buyer for the GMC. We'll see. It doesn't cost anything to sit here(tag was transferred to the TC).

That's what I did. Almost. I pointed mine east, a long way east, to the southwest coast of France. Sold my house. Gave away the furniture. Living in a VRBO for 2 months working on my long stay resident visa. Can't wait.

The Webcam gets a treat today as a rug comes back from the cleaners. It had better be clean this time. Whatever they did last time, cleaning wasn't it.

Ford Aerostar vans. I had a '92. It was a good reliable vehicle and sized right for what I needed. I liked the rear wheel drive .vs. the front drive of most other minivans. I often pulled a trailer to haul stuff around. It was kind of gutless, but it got the job done if you weren't in a hurry and didn't push it.

I think we had it to about 180k miles. It was still running fine, but had turned into a real rust heap and not worth much. We traded it in during the cash for clunkers program back in 2009. We got more money for it that way than we could have sold it for.

A funny thing about me buying cars. I seem to end up with cars that I didn't like the looks of when they first came out. When it was time to buy a used car, the car that fit my needs best was the ugly car I didn't like.

'92 Aerostar. I originally thought it was just plain ugly. However, the utility made me buy one.

'92 Chevy Lumina. I thought the greenhouse was too tall there was too much glass. However, I bought one when I needed a car with a front bench seat.

'00 Ford Explorer. I thought they looked too tall compared to similar small SUV's like its much sleeker contemporary Chevy Blazer. However, it had the utility I needed.

They tend to make utilitarian cars ugly for some reason. Maybe there is less likehood that they'll get stolen.
