None of my Spydercos are automatic. They open manually, with the round thumb hole.

But yes, spring-loaded switch blades have been illegal here as long as I've been old enough to be aware of them.

I always use mine [Shubb capo] open at the top. The mechanism doesn’t get in the way of my thumb that way. Same with Kyser.

I did a test this morning, trying my Shubb (original model that I bought in the mid '80s at McCabes) both directions. Neither way gets in my hand's way, except for some particular chord shapes (created by my wacky self).

It may not make it past the metal detector at the doorway.

Try a very sharp ceramic knife. (No real world experience with that, myself)

Sharp things, pointy things, and sharp and pointy things were outside of my childhood reality sphere. Explodey things, too. Horses, on the other hand .... And considering if you're around horses long enough, you'll be shoved, stomped, swatted, kicked, bitten, knocked, and thrown eventually — so I guess it works out even.

Sounds like it worked out better for the horse.

I did a test this morning, trying my Shubb (original model that I bought in the mid '80s at McCabes) both directions. Neither way gets in my hand's way, except for some particular chord shapes (created by my wacky self).

I sometimes wrap my thumb over onto the 6th or 5th string. Don’t know if that is considered a wacky cord shape, just how I do it. Can’t say that I’ve ever had a capo fall unless I dropped it.

I’m more prone to dropping picks. To avoid that, I have used Gorilla Snot. Not the hair product...

When my son was about 8 (he is now 23), he was really into anything military. I would take him to several local Army Surplus stores for him to look around and pick up something.

One day he was getting ready for school and packing his backpack and I noticed something that caught my eye in there. It was a real grenade (shell only). I thought about not saying anything just to get a half day off from work when the school (or police) called, but since I had a 30 minute commute, I decided to have my son remove it from his backpack before leaving for school.

Yes, I know that this is what the situation is like for many indigenous communities (on both sides of the Bering Strait). Some do better, some do worse. Rarely one meets elders (in the Far North) who are clearly more proficient in their own language than in English.

As already said, it is saddening

On this side of the Bering Strait, in Alaska, many of the villages up North happened to live on oil-rich land. As a result they have good schools and medical. A lot of their kids are going off to college. Their tribal governments are working hard to develop language food and traditional programs. The closer you get to cities like Anchorage, there are many indigenous lost souls who sit in shabby hotel lobbies asking passing guests for spare change. In my hometown of Sitka our tribal govnment is strong and thriving. And then there are like everywhere poor people both indigenous and non-indigenous. Many young people are not equipped to move away from their roots.

I have several "Assisted Opening" Kershaw and Benchmade knives, the longest being 3.5".

Ever since I was little, I always wanted a switchblade, just to have, not to carry.

A couple of summers ago, we were down at the Flea Market in Shipshewana, IN. One of the booths had knives and tools. I asked if they had switch blades. Yes. I got the old fashioned one.

I was later at a Gun and Knife Show and picked up a Double Action (Auto open and close) OTF (Out The Front). As long as I do not have both sides of the blade sharp, I believe it is legal. I don't bring it it anywhere so it really does not matter.

Maybe I should have started a thread called "Basses and Knives"?

Reminds me of a humorous event. A while back we were watching a movie where one of the characters got into a knife fight and was stabbed in the hand. He shrieked out in pain and I commented to Carey, "He sure is being dramatic for a knife cut..." A couple days later I was cutting tomatoes with one of my wife's sharp knives and nicked the tip of my finger. Now I shrieked out in pain! Wife Carey says I whined like a baby over that cut for a week. It sure hindered my bass playing and typing..

I don't necessarily believe in luck but today there was some. I went to CVS to get my second Shingrix shot. The pharmacist was talking to another customer about covid. I asked if they had any covid vaccines. She said they had two of the J&J. I went home, picked up the wife, and she got one of them! WhooHooo! Two people had made appts for the shots and didn't show. Talk about being the right place at the right time! Still have to take care, masks and stuff, but it sure takes away a lot of the stress knowing we've lowered the risk of us getting sick.

Wonder what the next month will look like with govs removing restrictions, spring break, and 300K+ people at a motorcycle rally in Daytona Beach. It don't think it will be good...

That's excellent about getting the JJ shot! Only one shot too. How long does it take to build the immunity? Carey's and mine were 21 days.

That's the width of the yard between the northern side of the house and the steep wooded hillside where trees do tree things. And animals do animal things. FSM only knows what goes on out there!

The covid survey I took today places me first in line when there is vaccine available.

Filled out pages and pages of paperwork today for a new doctor. All electronically signed, through the marvels of [stuff we don't see yet is perfectly understandable, and yet, fatally flawed ]

I hope you can get your trees at least trimmed back. Could be a tragedy waiting to happen. Glad you're in line for the vaccine. Still, even after getting both shots, Carey and I aren't going to travel anywhere at least until Fall. Let the country develop herd immunity.

I am so much looking forward to playing golf again, now that I've gotten the vaccine. Haven't swung a club since mid-fall of 2019. My golf cronies and I have been emailing and yakking on the phone occasionally, but we're all champing at the bit to get out there.

It was a hard winter for the trees where I walk. Wind storms brought down more than usual numbers of big branches. I also see a lot of lost bark at the bases. The city has a goal of planting a million trees. A policy that makes sense.
