Nothing like turning a bunch of 18 year old recruits and draftees from 21 year old drinking states loose on 3.2 beer in the PX/BX. What an unpleasant way to start one's drinking career.

Vague disappointment hangs over my being as I notice the menu at the brewpub offers no half-portions

That brewpub is a good place to be for a musician. When there's live music and all. Pre-plague its SRO on weekend nights. Down the street a bit at a gourmet pizza joint, there an outdoor stage ....

But we're talking Chicago, yes?

Which brewpub? I used to hang at the original Goose Island back in the '90s before they got bought out. Weren't a lot of choices back then for microbrews in Chicago.

One piece of advice for up and coming drinkers. Skip the communion wine. The old man's was NASTY.

And I should mention that: a) Wisconsin was 18 for beer and wine, and b) Wisconsin driver's licenses were paper with no photo. Pretty easy to change your birth year.

There were a coupla places in Miami that were a little loose with checking ID.
EDIT: First stop on the way to the drive-in movie. Second stop, a block away to put a coupla guys in the trunk.

It was well before the youtube era, but once upon a time, during a Braves day game, a fox made its way far into the upper decks of the (now long gone) Atlanta-Fulton County Stadium. Folks were concerned about it being rabid, since foxes are not known for being out in the daytime, much less in a stadium full of people. It was caught, however, and tested negative. Just bad timing, and really bad sense of direction on the part of the fox.

The brewpub here is a local microbrew. Their beers are widely available for a few meters' radius from their front door

My two primary hangs as a student were at the Four Star Sardine Bar, and the Heartland Cafe. The Four Star Sardine Bar was a jazz joint on the ground floor of a NU campus building. The Heartland Cafe because I lived directly next door to it in Rogers Park. "Home" when in Willowbrook means two nights to be ready for O'Hare again.
