Get off my LAWN! "Grumpy Old Farts"

Nothing like turning a bunch of 18 year old recruits and draftees from 21 year old drinking states loose on 3.2 beer in the PX/BX. What an unpleasant way to start one's drinking career. :vomit:
When I was in San Diego, the E-club couldn't serve alcohol to under 21s. That made Tijuana very popular.

There was one bar we found where you went down stairs from street level. It was there that I 'discovered' Carta Blanca. I'll remember the joint's name tomorrow-or next week-or not*. It was a block or so from another underground place that had a 'live animal' show.
*EDIT: Boing! Coronado Club

Some believe eating hot cross buns protect the house from fire. Romans baked pha:):)us shaped bread in the springtime. Breads in that shape were baked for Easter in the town of Saintonge as recently as the 19th century. Russian Orthodoxes still bake Kulichi at Easter.

The most famous reference to these suggestively baked Roman breads is an epigram by Martial

"Si vis esse satur, nostrum potes esse priapum: Ipse licet rodas inguina, purus eris."

The executive summary for hot cross buns and its antecedents is: better to eat the bread. Likely there's a reason the frosting is kind of meh.

Our usual hang was The Jockey Club on Avenida Revolucion. The norm was to order a pitcher of Carta Blanca or Tecate and drink straight from that, no glass. The cigarette vendor sold rolls of ten white crosses wrapped in foil for a dollar. Take four of them, you're awake for twenty four hours, grinding your teeth and looking for someone to read the phone book to. Gave me a taste for speed. Overseas the corpsmen handed out very small yellow tabs that had the same effect, plus creating a pre-psychotic rage....which the Marine Corps encouraged. Jeez, the things you can survive when you're 18.

Orthodox easter is always later, April 16 this year. Blessing of the bread the night before is a tradition that many follow. The bread was very fancy. I particularly liked the large round loaves of raisin bread. My more artistic Ukrainian family members would hand paint easter eggs. A tradition that died with the folks from the old country that arrived at the turn of the last century.
