This country has become the Larry, Darryl and Darryl of business practices: "anything for a buck." I recently asked an appliance repairman who was replacing the motor on the 7-year-old dishwasher what brands he recommended to friends and family. He said, "Honestly, everything is such junk now, I just tell them to go get a cheap Frigidaire dishwasher, because they're going to be replacing whatever they buy in three or four years anyway, so going cheap will make it less painful." Retailers don't know you after the proverbial cash drawer is closed. We marvel and exclaim when someone does a job right these days, when no reputable, self-respecting tradesman used to consider doing things any other way. "An honest day's work for an honest wage" has become "Screw you, buddy, I've got mine, you can look out for yourself." Nobody trusts what a store owner tells them about a product without first having spent a lot of time online reading reviews, hoping the reviews are unbiased. Pride in the quality of what a vendor provides is almost rare anymore. Bah. You kids get off my lawn.
