For the last several days, I’ve been working on Stella by Starlight - the Miles Davis arrangement.
From there I was able to cobble together the approximate chords for the Maynard Ferguson version which, I understand, was an update of an old Lionel Hampton arrangement. I tried to play along with the Maynard version but there are sections where it is rather fast. That is, mm=1,000,000,000.
For those who like big bands or Maynard:
Mike Migliore’s sax solo is very good, but it walks very close to the “too darn many notes” line. Nevertheless, he shows off some serious chops. Some of you might find this hard to believe (as in impossible to believe) but I will allow that Mike may be a better sax player than I am a bass player. I know, I know. You’re thinking, “That can’t be!”
Anyway, I hope all here enjoy Maynard’s version of Stella as much as I do.

Interesting. Different. As if "Stella's" changes weren't weird enuff on their own.
My 'bitter half', who isn't musically trained, refers to solos like the alto solo here as "running scales". Even though I get what's being played, to some degree I wonder if they're being paid by the note.
The worst I’ve heard in the “too many notes club” is Al Di Meola on guitar. I totally get that playing 64th notes on a fast song shows off some skills, but I would rather hear an interpretation of the melody that is fresh, interesting, and not completely based on speed. They live in different worlds, but that is why I prefer Santana’s solos to those offered by Al Di Meola.
I thought I had heard some very different versions of Stella, but that version wins the “Unique” award. I liked it, but it is just a smidge different than the Miles Davis arrangement.
Who would want to come back?

Sad, in a way... Seeing that list of discontinued films is for me like looking at a list of disappeared old friends... I usta love Fujifilm's ISO-400! Put that in a good German 35mm camera, and wow!! But one can't really argue with the ease and quality of digital photography; what a pleasure it is now to be able to take almost unlimited shots of a subject until you get that very special right one!
But then, with the quality of phone photography improving everyday, even my lovely all-lighting fast little Nikon D40 gets less and less use because of the ultra-convenience of the omnipresent damn phone. -Which IMO is still (and perhaps will always be?) a long way off from the quality and abilities of a good digital SLR!!

Always partial to AgfaPan, myself, but it is Tri-X that gets it done. Felt that FujiFilm was artificially vivid.
Four-colour printing reminds me that yeah there was something I've waited to say. When you write something for a professor emeritus of journalism, it'd better be a cracking good piece of work.
Did you do your own processing of Tri-X? Printing?

I could, and I did, got darkroom learninated before puberty. At work, different deal.
I imagine that people that worked at the paper would bring in their personal film for processing.
To what? A large cinder?Who would want to come back?
