How did they do that? Different brand of components or different circuit design?
Different circuit. The output level was boosted, that made it a different power amp. A big change was the design of the output transformer. They added extra taps on the primary to make the amp more linear. These so called ultra-linear taps tamed the sound and made the amp sound less gritty when pushed.
These amps still distort and are loved buy people that want a clean sound. They were just quite different from the so called pre-CBS blackface amps.
Sweetwater recently posted a buncha links to music vids they defined as Sophisti-Pop. I'd describe it as mellow mostly Brit rock, somewhat remindful of ABBA. Never heard of that defined music category before, but I enjoyed it. -Getting older I guess, going for the 'mellow' now...
But then not really when I think about it; I usta really dig Montovani back in the 60's. Play that great lush version of Montovani's "Greensleeves" on our brand new wedding-present Grundig stereo and I'd drift off into a deeply peaceful place... (-Even w/o the booze and drugs!) But then I also dug the Allman Bros stuff (also Hank Williams, also Irish pop music), so I guess I always was fairly eclectic in my musical tastes.
Anyway now tho I gotta get back more into playing and enjoying bass... Have been only mostly involved with percussion lately with no real call for playing bass guitar out anywhere, so I've been getting lazy with it. Got a new set of both rounds and different flats over a week ago 'cause I didn't like the LaBella MUS flats currently on the Mustang, and I haven't yet tried them out!! -Inexcusable behavior, right?

CBS also added caps in the power amp circuitry that screwed up the tone and created instability and oscillation, plus they messed with the bias circuitry, changing it to a "hum balance" arrangement. Most of this stuff can be reversed back to blackface topology. IIRC, the only amp CBS didn't mess with was the Princeton Reverb Amp until they changed it to a different design in the late '70s with the added distortion circuit.
I do that just about every day. For me it's my foot though, not my "leg".

I've seen some large gatherings going on, people in close proximity. I don't know if I could ever feel comfortable doing that again.
Some Covid advice. There's a dirty little secret that they aren't telling you. You've had you two vaccines and feel good about it. The problem is, effectiveness reduces with time. They talk about a comming booster that may address the variants but you also need a booster to bring the effectiveness back up again to what it was a couple of weeks after you got your second shot. Please don't let your guard down.

Given the issues that bank has had with breaches, their motto should be, “Who’s in your wallet?”
He sets a pretty high standard. It's tastefully done withought using too many notes. I'd add Prince to your list. Both Page and Beck have said that they were inspired by Buchanan's playing.
