Not sure if it’s true but there was a rumour that Carol Kaye has sold what she claims is the same pick that she used on a Good Vibrations session many times. Good for her.

She has a web site that sells merch including picks. She was offering bass lessons via skype for $75 but seems to be taking a rest now.

Maybe she did that session like a Presidential signing: play two bars, select another pick, rinse, repeat.

I got a chance to chat with her a bit via email several years back. Seemed very nice. Dunno about all the Kaye vs Jamerson stuff; I always thought bassists were the chillest cats, but the battles over these claims taught me otherwise. Oh, well. I still like (did I say like? Love!) what I've heard come out of both locations.

Shooting on the next season of Maisel wrapped in July. We’ll hopefully see it in the fall.

The Carol Kaye one-on-one lesson would have been well worth the $75. Just to have a chance to experience a session with such a master.

Bought one of her books somewhere around the time I bought my Stingray. bookmark that And the shop receipt is still in the book. It's a book of transcriptions done by one of her students. I recall copping the opening lick from Wichita Lineman, and you know what? That's one cool lick.

I wouldn't mind studying one of her books on standards.

It's a week ago today I gave the go-ahead on repairs to my Stingray. Some keen minds here recall a pretty corroded bridge, along with a (presumably) corroded preamp. Bottom line is a vintage instrument with all original bits that doesn't work is not so useful to me.

Yes to the replacement bridge bolts, and saddles, and mutes, and a replacement preamp directly from EBMM. Been several months to reach the top of EBMM's queue.

Thinking more and more on that bass of mine as I spin up a Louis Johnson vid from the late 70s. Thunder Thumbs. Who is no more me than Carol Kaye

Summer's all too short

I see a few red maple leafs on the ground. Too soon for that sort of thing. It’s been a hard year for trees with the infestation of moth caterpillars eating much of the leafs on some types of trees.

At least the farmer’s markets are bountiful.

The week started with comfortable weather, today is hot and humid getting a little more so each day.

Lughnasad — the solar midpoint between summer solstice and autumn equinox — occurs on August 7. It's typically celebrated on August 1 the same way Samhain is celebrated on October 31.

Odin and I find black walnuts on our walks. That's the sure sign of autumn for me. The deer fawns are growing too old for their spots, I see, as they graze beyond my office window. What I expect come next spring and summer is a great deal of catnip. Deer leave it alone. Not seen any mountain lions .... but they're pretty good at not being seen.

Sitting with the quiet neighbours is always relaxing. I like the timeless nature, one place where things remain the same. Many in that section date back to the 1800’s.

Out on the roads Tuesday to pick up the year's supply of beef. Organic and grassfed, custom butchered. Put about 400# in the freezer. Cut up some some tbones yesterday to cook down for carne asada. There's a big brisket in there, but I'm thinking porterhouse tomorrow.

Yes, bragging camp goes very well.

Also....so far this summer I've relocated 18 raccoons. Anybody need one?

Putting my medical paperwork in the mail to-day. While I have every expectation of survival, and a peaceful life to follow, seems I've also been put on notice. And yet, nothing new to see.
