Are you familiar with arbequina olive oil? It's a Spanish olive, small, with a large pit. Delicious! The EVO oil that comes from it is may favorite. There are California arbequinas now, so availability in the U.S. should be better.

Once you go arbequina, you never go back. It has been my #1 for over 20 years. Haven't come across anything better in that time.

Thanks, I'll look for that.

I like eating olives. The processed pitted ones can be higher in salt, the ones with pits in oil are good.

Oil cured black olives for me, thanks.

Hey. <- friendly hey

Recap ... wrote the bass instructor at the local liberal arts college to say I'm interested finding in people who want to have a go at the Real Book with me. He replies Happy to help you. I've a ton of gigs right now, let's talk when school is back in session.

Black pepper. Unsalted butter, or olive oil, sparingly on vegetables.
Yes, I also... Frying eggs up in a pan coated with olive oil, a pinch of pepper, a sprinkle of Mrs. Dash's herbs, yum! -So who needs salt (& high BP) anyway!

Although... although.... I did eat some sorely craved small pretzels the other day....
-As per that great K.D. lang song that always rattles my composure:
"Constant Craving Has Alwaaays Been...." :banghead:

Grateful high blood pressure is the least of my medical concerns. No reason to make it a greater concern with salt. And yes, I like pretzels. But not enough to keep any around. Crisps are good too, and view them the same way as I do peanuts, pumpkin seeds, corn chips &c.

IMO high fructose corn syrup is a great deal nastier than salt, and I take care to read labels before buying. That pewp is in seemingly everything.

I sometimes make my own crisps (potato chips). Thinly cut the potato with a mandoline, place on foil in the toaster oven, drops of olive oil, then use the oven fry setting for a few minutes.

Small pretzels must be on sale. I bought a small bag, enjoyed some, then disposed of them. I can't trust myself not to keep eating them.

Restricted diets only make you crave what you shouldn't have.

I used to have a fake book. If someone asked for a song that you didn't know, you'd pull out your fake book and see the words and chords, maybe an abbreviated chart. You'd fake it from there. These days you can simply preview the song on the interweb, even bring up all you need.

I'm wondering if the real book volumes are a take on a fake book.

That's exactly what I saw with open mikes (when there were open mikes to go to, before The Thing That's Going Around). The BL calls up the head on his smrtphn and fakes it when $RandomGuy wants to play a song he knows.

Faking it is all I've ever done

Well, lessee. I have a flip phone-can't call up lyrics and if I could, couldn't see them; don't have-or have the $ for-a laptop/tablet thing-y; need a music stand for my lyrics 'cheat sheet' anyway, so, yeah-fakebooks. Plus in the currently on hiatus jazz group, the the trumpet man brings in lead sheets/charts.

You can get them for any style in paperback form these days. Good if you take requests.

The brick and mortar where my Stingray is camped has an entire room for sheet music.(!) Likely because they are both a piano and band instrument retailer. While I don't know this for certain, I believe the local school systems still have music programs. There are many band instrument accessories for sale on the main showroom floor — reeds, saxophone straps, all that. The band instruments have their own room. And there are two rooms for stringed instruments. One for electric, and one for acoustic.

Honestly don't recall what grade reed I used when I played sax. I do remember pride in a nice neck strap. Whether that was warranted is another question.

IIRC the old fake books were sold under the table at music stores because of copyright infringment concerns. Then someone got the bright idea to sell a book with stuff all done above board so it could be sold legally and The Real Book was born. Nowadays nobody remembers the old fake books. Except us old farts.

With our group, we can play just about any 60s/70s rock song requested. Lyrics are the problem. Coupla the guys have smrtphns and could call up the lyrics. If we start workin' more, I'll look into getting something where we could cobble together a song on a break. With wi-fi nearly everywhere, we oughta be able to google pretty much anything.

2 1/2s for me. Oh. Got my bari back last night. Haven't tried it yet. Haven't played any of the saxes since(what decade is this?)so I might be a tad rusty.

Mine was in a small binder, certainly nothing published. Sounds exactly as you described.
