One day climbing rock with someone teaches me more about who they really are than years of living together, I find. While these lessons are rooted in the apparently "long ago", they're just as serviceable today.

I went on a back country pack trip in the high sierra a few years back with a friend of mine. Man, one day would have been enough to teach me most of the things I didn't want to know about her but an entire week of that was pretty eye-opening.

Funny...I always understood the "Irish goodbye" to be quite the opposite...as explained by my Irish grandmother. You walk your guest halfway home, then he walks partway back with you, etc. I watched one yesterday. Abi was seeing off a visitor at our house. They went out the door at 2:30. At 3:30 the guest had the door open on her car. Finally pulled out of the driveway at 4:15.

I still see that from time to time. Don't know how they can make money doing that today.

When I was a kid there was a rag man that would drive up the back alley with a horse drawn cart. You'd just dump your stuff in the back.

School dress code was so strict for so long, uncertain if I ever shook it all. That's a lot of tie dye but no patchouli. We did determine Earth Shoes were the BCGs of foot wear.

That brings up a conundrum: Between Denny's and Perkins, where would we most likely find Lawrence?

Perkins for a morning breakfast, Denny's for after-hours breakfast, a friend told me.

There certainly are. I married three of them. In serial, not parallel.

I had a boss back in the day that married and divorced his first wife twice. Not sure why he thought a repeat would work. Third marriage, second woman didn't work either. Pretty sure the troubles were mostly him.

There was a getting back to normal We Love NY concert in central bark last night. Around 6K people were sent home seemingly because of a storm. Barry Manilow was performing mid song and they shut the concert down.

Now people are wondering, was the concert really shut down because of the storm or was it because Barry wondered onto the stage.

Getting back to normal? I think that is a little premature.

I had similarities on a 10 day scooter trip with a good friend. Some things I knew about him were confirmed and had surprises on others. We camped for most of the trip which is fine. I wanted to do that, too. The few times we had to get a hotel he moaned about the cost. Don't worry about it, I'll pay for it. Geez. Half way through the trip he said he was running out of cash and needed to head home. What? We talked about this trip for three months and he knew where we were going. I told him do what you think you need to do but I'm finishing the trip! He stayed on.

Yeah, she pretty much just complained about everything the whole time. We were in a group of about 20 other horseback riders who had all paid a good deal of money for this trip and it became clear from the start that she was hell bent on currying favor with the trip guides by impressing them with her academic credentials. It also became clear that none of the other riders on the trip wanted anything to do with her. I felt like a pariah by default and association. Couldn't wait to get back home.

I've attended more than a couple of Barry concerts. My wife is a huge fan and always went with me to see jazz live so I kinda owed it to her.

Barry puts on a heck of a show and always has dynamite musicians with him. One time we saw him and his lead sax player was none other than Dave Koz.
