I couldn't agree more. Mankind has a responsibility for stewardship and activities like the ones you listed are the antithesis of that.

I get that. Happens to me a lot. When I can't seem to find the solution, first step is to get away from it. I go for a walk. If I don't nail it don't after that, sleep on it. IT "engineers" are not real engineers though.

If you solve problems by putting science and technology to work for man, you're an engineer in my book. IT stuff is as high tech and certainly as confusing as any science I ever studied. :)

I can't even begin to tell you how many solutions have to come to me in my sleep or when mowing the lawn or got worked out on a napkin during a lunchtime conversation where a colleague and I suddenly had the breakthrough idea. There may even be few cafeteria napkins that with a few more details eventually became classified designs IIRC.

About a month ago, ou4 >30 yr old stove slowly started giving up the ghost. The other day it finally died, so we thought.

Went to HD, get another picked out, wait 4 days, delivered today...only to find that even after resetting the 220 breaker, the line trips after 20 minutes or so.

Now, no one making less than $3Million a year wants to pay boomtown double overtime rates for an electrician (standing weekend), and I’m gigging out of town, wife on jury duty Monday. Figure the next home cooked meal will be Tuesday at the earliest and cost about 1200, unless major rewiring is needed, then a whoooooole lot more.

Hopefully, it's just a touchy breaker or the wall plug itself that needs replacing. If only we could get a nuclear physicist or astronaut to come out and do plumbing or wiring, they typically cost less an hour than folks in the trades.

...and people wonder I'm willing to pay to keep my old stuff running as long as possible, even when it's not the economically smart thing to do.

Thank you sir... I always get a warm fuzzy when you give me a positive nod. I would say I am more of an engineer than my fellow network "engineers" and software "engineers," who seem to crave the title, based on the fact that I understand compression (as in prestressed concrete and how it works), tensile strength and sheer strength AND I know how to tie my shoes. To me a real engineer has an outstanding understanding of his specialty, AND any other aspect that affects his designs (for a EE, mechanical, thermal dynamics, regulatory, and the list goes on), and a good understanding of other aspects of engineering outside his own specialty, really knowing a little of everything. Ultimately, it comes down to practical application. They absolutely have to tie their own damned shoes. I wear boots. If they come untied once during the day, I have failed.
