Get off my LAWN! "Grumpy Old Farts"

I hope you and Carey enjoy your BBQ time this weekend Will! I'm stuck inside reviewing some materials for some colleagues and it needs to be done by Monday morning...I keep wondering what happened to my brilliant retirement plan??? :banghead:
I'm with you on that brother! I'm still working! :blackeye:

We finally have such nice weather, I think I'll go after my hedge row now. It's been needing attention for quite some time. Maybe a little off the top and sides, but mostly pulling out the junk that doesn't need to be growing in it and cutting out some dead wood. I gave it a really good scalping last spring and haven't needed to trim it since. They certainly have a large root structure and a strong will to survive. Last year I pulled out some starts from a garden some 30 feet away.

After that, Filipino BBQ chicken and some shrimp to get on the barby, with a big smoke box full of hickory.

I have either 3 or 4 years to go. I'm 66. I don't look 66, I don't feel 66. It's funny, our parents' generation-- 66 year olds looked like Fred Merck on "I Love Lucy." Very high pants. Almost to the chest. Buttermilk. Nah, not me. I still wear a black leather jacket, jeans, white sneakers on Casual Fridays. I think the Boomer Generation will redefine what getting older means and when to retire. We are not our parents' generation.

I have to admit, it is a bit creakier when I get up in the morning, but once I take a hot shower I bounce back. Retirement? I see it down the road but not for a while. And I love my job.

And the survey says:

I planted those trees about 5 years ago. There were supposed to be four, but rabbits ate one. I guess they taste like chick to a rabbit. River birch. Everyone said they wouldn't thrive. I watered them the first couple of years. You can barely see the slope in the yard, but they're about 3 ft from the lowest part, so the roots get all the water. I would have liked to get them 3 ft closer to the street, but they are right on the edge of the easement. 20 ft fromt center, added a foot, and the city can't touch them as long as I trim them back from the street a bit. The other thing is a Lilac I planted two years ago from upshoots off my mega-giant- big-huge Lilac that's probably 50 or 70 years old. Biggest I've ever seen, but I had to cut back a lot of it this year. It will be huge again in two years.

When I was a wee lad, we got to buy one souvenir when we went to Wrigley field. I bought a start from the Ivy. My dad thought it was a rip off and my brothers thought it was stupid. Now a whole side of my mom's house is covered with it. Last summer I brought back some starts I pulled out of her lawn. The idea is to cover the reminisce of a fence I made years ago (out of 1.5 x 1.5 square tube railing from the now defunct Landus and Gyre, formerly Duncan Meter).

I'm fortunate enough to afford to really be retired, but I just can't seem to get away from the business. I figure that some day they won't be calling anymore and that'll be my cue to move on, but until then I'll keep answering the phone. The good news is that among the "retired but still working crowd" I'm still a younger guy.

As a final thought, I'm really grateful to have the choice!

I'll bet it's also pretty cool to still have a foot in the industry.

Truth be told, it is. You know as well as any of us how this business gets into your blood and what a brotherhood it is. I'm at a point in my life where the job isn't who I am, but it's still a big part of how I see myself.

I'm not in the same industry as you, but I have a technical job and I love going into work every day. I love problem solving, and finding solutions for things some very smart people can't figure out for themselves. Wish I got their pay though! :sorry:
