A couple weeks ago Carey started coughing and wheezing. Her cough sounded like a cold or infection, but our new young doctor just said it probably would clear up. Fast forward two weeks and she's worse off and having trouble breathing and coughing and wheezing. We are lucky enough to get in and see an older seasoned doctor.

The doctor immediately listens to her lungs, looks at her history, and then starts explaining. She has a slight lung infection. It was being exasperated by using too much albuterol nebulizer, so he prescribed her a combination albuterol with a steroid, antibiotics, and special "pak" antibiotics. Then he sent her to the lab and got a battery of blood tests and lung x-rays. Her lungs looked fine, and it turns out there's something in our home she's allergic to, she has allergies. That was never discovered before. Now he ordered an allergy blood test.

There's something to be said for the older sage silver hair doctors. They may not look modern young and sexy but they have a wealth of knowledge in their heads. I feel blessed that it was this doctor Carey saw. If we saw our young new doctor and he didn't take any of these signs seriously how long would Carey have continued to be sick or how much worse could it have gotten. I'm now having second doubts about choosing the young guy for our primary and thinking the old silver hair doctor might be a better choice-- he understands the issues with older people.

I asked my urologist how much longer he was planning to stay in the biz. Ya might wanna ask "silver hair" the same thing. He has something the young guy ain't got-and won't have for a while-experience.

Likewise. This time of year, my family's allergies go nuts. Hopefully she's not allergic to you-that shoulda come up sooner-LOL. Seriously, has anything new been introduced into your environment? FWIW,I live on Claritin or Allegra or ? allergy med.

They do get itchy eyes, itchy coats and in some instances hives and reactions to bug bites.

Small white dogs get seasonal allergies and are often allergic to fleas. Mine both get a cocktail of chicken flavored prednisolone plus antihistamines every day. At $70 a bottle, the phamacist that mixes it won't give my vet the recipe!

The allergy manifests itself as skin problems. Tator Salad itches and scratches herself raw and T-bone get funky skin growths in funky places.

The best solution to itching dogs I've found is a shot of Cytopoint. Unlike Apoquel (a relatively recent wonder drug from the same company for the same thing) it requires no periodic blood testing and it works for weeks to months with no side-effects that I've noticed. I'm only familiar (first hand) with its use in Germen Shepherds, but it has saved many working dogs from needing to be retired from duty according to vets I've talked with.

That's rough. We had a scottie that was allergic to the fleas and a neighbor with a malamute that was a flea farm. Fleas don't respect fences.

Thanks all ya GOF's for well wishes for Carey. We go back next week for the blood allergy results. Same doctor. Today I stayed home and made her spend time getting sleep. Since she couldn't breathe well and was wheezing she didn't sleep well. Now that she's getting medicine I have to play bad guy and make her try to lay down and sleep. But I don't mind she's my everything...

My dog was a master at spitting out pills unless they were hidden in really stinky cheese. He liked the cheese too much to care if there was a pill in there.

I've been tasked with cooking the next couple days so it might be Micky Dee's and Subway! Actually we had a good amount of coho salmon given to us this year and I'm probably going to throw it on our little grill. Very tasty stuff. Last of the big seiners leaving town, and "chum" or "silver"salmon season is over. Few boats staying behind to get drunk at the P bar and general carousing. The tour boats have slowed way down and fewer tourists to try to run over walking through downtown in the middle of the streets like it's Disneyland!

As we say here in FL, if it's tourist season, can we shoot them? LOL. Our group got hosed out of a gig 9/21 by the mgr. not putting it in his calendar so our next engagement is 10/6. Hope we remember the songs!
