Question if I may. Recently I’ve been getting different pages popping up instead of the standard look. Anyone else know what is going on?

Yes. At the very bottom left you can select the look in the style chooser panel. I have RETRO 2008 for example. Pick the one that you want to save.

Sometimes TalkBass gets confused and looses your configuration. In my case with an iPad if you hover over the wrong place it can change a setting without you even selecting the button.

That happens every year about this time, pretty much like clockwork.

I used to teach a US Goverment class that was a graduation requirement. When I handed out the final exam, I'd put this on the classroom stereo.

In '67 I was in an electronics school aboard MCRD San Diego. 28 week course, exam every Friday. Scores were statistically curved, so they announced in advance how many would fail...lowest 3 or whatever the computer spit out. 3 fails and you were dropped from the course. They guaranteed that if you were dropped, you'd be carrying an M16 in Vietnam within a month. Much motivation.

So, I broke my butt studying like everyone else, finished the course, and went to Vietnam, assigned to a communications section. 2 weeks later, they declared half of the techs surplus, and I ended up walking around in the woods with an M-14 and a radio backpack. Much disappointment.

Just what you wanted, an antenna sticking up so the other side knows where to aim. I restored a R-390A like below from that era. Beautiful radio. Not something anyone could hump in a manpack like the PRC-77.

They did the same thing at the school that I went to. After the first year, half the undergraduate class was gone.

It’s gotten a lot easier these days. People tend not to fail. Parents literally show up with lawyers if students deem an exam or even certain questions unfair or too difficult. Some schools are abolishing grades, everyone gets a trophy.

They are raising the highway speed limit in some areas. One justification that was given: people will get to work sooner and will work longer hours so they will be more productive. I kid you not.

I’ve never had any job that was 8-5, where you go home at the end of the day and the time is your own. You had to meet the unrealistic deadlines or were gone.

Some countries such as Germany legislate against this. People go home and aren’t allowed to take their work or computers with them. They get to take their vacations and are not expected to work during them. Of course, the productivity of these sites is way down. The workers are happier and have a life outside work. As it should be.

Yes and in France it's illegal to even require employees to respond to email after work hours.

Italy, of course, is virtually closed for the whole of August.

The beeper may be one of the most insidious management tools ever hoisted on staff. So yeah maybe okay during working hours but not okay sleeping with the beeper on the nightstand. Woe to any who sleeps through a call ....

Life can be far more civilized in parts of Europe.

Spain is another example. They get their long lunch and nap but work later in the day. The Swiss and Nordic countries know how to live.

If I worked until 18:00 in my Milan office, building security would show up to see I left the building. As in Now.

The normal day saw espresso and dolcce at 16:00, everyone to a trattoria for an after-work drink and snack. All back home until we all go out for dinner around 22:00. Morning sees a chocolate croissant and cappuccino around 9:00 and walk to the office.

Civilization.

Years ago I passed up a chance to buy new depot TV-7D/U tube testers with all the docs for $75 each. The TV-2/CU’s were just a little more. I’m still kicking myself for passing up on that opportunity.
