there is a guy who truly wants to be a jazz drummer and he's got his kit set up Gene Krupa style. Nothing more he loves in life. But it's not really going to make him a living, he figures, so he's a cardiac surgeon. Qualify that. A beatnik cardiac surgeon and drummer. As in an actual beatnik.

He sits down and figured out exactly how much his funeral costs are and

spends that sum on a home stereo system. Macintosh power amp.

Jazz at his house every weekend, just bring your instrument. New Years Eve is an all-nighter at his house and I show up at 3 with my bass.

He's left us now these many years but his scrub nurse and I talk regularly. Very cool lady.

I assure myself that I don’t need to ensure that life insurance is needed to dispose of my remains. All I’ll be is dust in the wind. I really should update my will to include a beneficiary exclusion list.

I saw an insurance commercial the other day. It was just for home appliances. If you total your washing machine, they’ll pay for a new one. I can only imagine how many washing machines you will pay for before you made a claim, if ever.

^ one of the better lines in Bill and Ted's Excellent Adventure and they're making a new one now. Just saw the casting for the actresses who are playing Bill and Ted's daughters and they found two who look just like them. This is going to be a must-see.

You might be surprised by the small print to see what the deductible is. Reminds me of my recent experience with Directv.

My 40" LED tv packed it in and I happened to mention it to them in an unrelated call. I was told that I have insurance on that and should file a claim. I was unaware of the insurance but checked into it and found it was one of their "free upgrades" from awhile back. One of those free for a limited time, then $8 per month, cancel anytime "deals". Of course, I, like many others they count on, forgot. Long story short, I paid their $50 deductible to ship it to them, was without the tv for long enough that I bought a new one for $200.

But, at least I have an old tv as a spare . Could have had two new ones.

It being the day it is I’d like to put out a hearty big THANK YOU to the folks who invaded the beaches in Normandy 75 years ago. Watching the service today I can only gasp at their courage and fortitude. I could only hope for such in myself. Seeing guys in their Nineties once more jumping out of perfectly good aircraft in order to commemorate those who did the same but didn’t come back.

One thing I didn’t know was that Canada did not have conscription. All of those guys, some of them still children who lied about their age, volunteered to be there. 359 Canadians died that first day! They had to dig in for protection and then dig graves for the lost ones. <sigh>

I hate war!

My Dad was there, on Omaha Beach. He was in the press corps and managed to have a better time of it than many, but he still saw bombs fall in London and jumped off an LST on that first day. When he passed his last employer sent the whole family there to the beach head to take in a bit of what it was about. A good friend's dad was in the RAF and flew support missions for my Dad's outfit as well.

My dad was a rifleman, he puked his guts up along with just about everyone else as they were bounced around in the landing craft. It only got worse after that.

Mine missed D-Day but got in on the 'fun' of "the Bulge". 28th Infantry division. Later in the division band.

a lot of people do that later in life. I cashed out my policies when I retired. Still got the $ too!

My dad also missed D-Day. 90th Infantry division, Battle of the Bulge and all that. He said the worst that he saw, and he saw a lot, was liberating concentration camps.
