I sure do hope you have nothing but good news from the doctors. This is the part where getting old kind of sucks, but my dad always said it beats the alternative. He would know for sure now.

Yes, apparently a fiver is mandatory standard issue if you're going to play New Country. I was given four songs to learn and almost all of them contain notes below the low E. One has a droning low D throughout much of the song, and another one has a slide down to the low C that's very prominent in the song. The others are passing tones that probably could be transposed up and no one would notice much. But the studio cats are apparently going in there with these things to record, so we're hearing a lot of that in the genre.

I know nothing much about New Country but I'm enjoying playing stuff outside my usual fare. It sort of takes me all the way back to the 70's, when there were a lot of bands coming up through rock that had a country edge to them, like the Eagles. It's definitely not 1-5-8 stuff, and some of the arrangements are tricky, but it's not terribly hard to play. Plus, there are a ton of harmonies and I love to harmonize.

Here's my favorite of the four songs I was asked to learn. This one really doesn't use the B string much, but I am in love with this song. I fail to hear much "country" in it, though.

It's nice to be missed! I'm around, kinda busy. Haven't been in this thread too much recently so now I feel like I have a lot of catching up to do.

I guess I'll update; things here are pretty good. I'm auditioning this afternoon for a new country band that claims to be working, I'd like a little extra cash for my efforts now and then, and since I was recently forced to learn to play a 5-string I figure I can cash in on a new skill . We'll see how it goes. My track record with auditions is pretty good but my track record with liking bands I audition for is less good. So I've been busy this week working on their audition songs.

And that is all. Everyone in the S household is healthy and happy, even all four dogs. My husband was supposed to play a last-minute show today but there's fire nearby so the event was cancelled. Bummer but he's secretly happy as he experiences a lot of anxiety when he isn't fully prepared, and they called him just a few days ago.

And that is all the news here. Now I'm off to read how everyone else is doing.

He's best known for his uncanny Johnny Cash like vocals, but he also plays lot of New Country and is kind of a closet Deadhead, so my five string singlecut hippie sammich bass didn't even faze him.

Haha, the BL in this band I'm auditioning for told me three years ago he didn't know anything about New Country and was a punk rocker all his life. Now he's on stages in a cowboy hat.

In other news, we had a surprise visitor at our usual Friday night jam. He was the original guitarist when the jam started 12 years ago. I go back with him for about twice as long. Some of the other long timers got a nice refresher in how many of those tunes we play every week actually go. But this guy also had a bunch of really cool originals he's written since moving to the Big Island. We recorded 33 tunes and ran out of time (10 o'clock curfew, LOL) and disc space before tunes. Good times.

My Sears poncho is an actual knee-length rauna that a Colombian friend gifted me in the late 70s. Hasn't seen stage use this century. Gonna say no to hats, we hateses hat hair we does.

I will not wear a hat on stage. Probably will do pigtails, western shirts and jeans if I end up in this band.

I dunno. The prog band I sang in back in the 90's had a bassist (not me) who had hair halfway down his back. None of us wore capes though I suspect the keys player secretly wanted to. I have videos of that too, be careful, I might share them. I am in a video sorta mood today.

Hair past my waist in my late teens. Only when wet though, it went sideways as it curled up. If there are vids they are well hidden, which is fine by me.

The best reason to love old videos is seeing the skinny thing I used to be. That's probably also the best reason to hate them.

My late brother Tom played the cowboy, I was always the Indian!
