When I was starting out, we played a dance sharing the bill with another band made up of friends. We were rough and sloppy, the other band was well practiced, precise, and had professional equipment. Our amps were pushed to the edge of blowing up. Mine was literally smoking. We both played similar songs.
The crowed loved our band. We were told that we were the life of the party. It taught us all a lesson, people love rawness and high energy over playing perfectly. By the end of the evening, both bands joined together and we were making an amazing sound.
Any band can be made to work and improve if the players have a serious commitment.
The first band that I made real money in was backing up a country player. There’s money in country music.

I hear ya. But at 60, I don't feel like I have the time to devote to a band that may or may not end up being good. I'm looking for something that checks all the boxes now, so I can have maximum fun as I approach my inevitable demise.

Meshing well together should be at the top of the list. We once had a manager that thought they could change people. It seriously affected the group dynamic. Some referred to her as attila the hen.
It sure tops my list. But for me it starts with mutual respect for everyone's abilities. If you don't have that, you don't have much. That's the basis that everything else gets built upon.
Or, put another way, if I can't bear to hear someone play, I'm not going to be happy to be in a band with them. I'm in a band with one of those people right now and it's making me miserable (and I am not the only one). That person has been encouraged to practice more, to work harder on parts, but the problems persist and we have all about had it. So I'm sure not jumping into another situation with those sorts of problems written all over it.
What's sad about the aforementioned situation is that we have sounded good in the past. One person got lazy, and we don't play or practice enough to keep him sharp. That's all it took.
As for me I’m still trying to find a Country band that needs an old Fart bass player. The band I’m currently in plays 50’s and 60’s tunes. Stuff I learned when I got my first bass as a kid.

Yeah, I go back and forth on this one. It's a lot of time and effort to do these auditions and they rarely amount to anything, for whatever reason. Then I get discouraged and start thinking I should just forget about it. Been there and done that, though, and I always end up crawling back to music. @BassmanPaul you are part of the greatest generation of performing musicians. Don’t let it get you down. If you’re not in a band, do what I do— play along with YouTube. Hang in there!

I always try to put the positive spin on it by reminding myself that learning anything new is good for my chops. And it is. So there's that.
It's also good for our brains as we age, to keep learning.

Call it The Age Spots, or The Liver Spots, or The Liver Puddle-lians (big age spots).
