At that point you can do the metal version.
We had a steel drummer sit in with us a coupla times. Did that one , St. Thomas, Theme from Black Orpheus and some others. Cool sound-and he knew what he was doing.
"T-bup,t-bup" to you too. Doo-wop at its finest. Some nice chord substitutions on the head.

Nope, it's actually not a Jobim tune, although he played on the movie soundtrack. Ask the guy who's still been caught cheating with the Real Book chart occasionally even after 40 years of playing it...
And oddly enough, I had never heard it called "A Day In The Life" until an audition I played on a gig I thought I was just mixing. The band members were pretty surprised how well I got through it "reading cold." When they called a bass solo I was just like "how many choruses?"
Oh, well, that's what our guitarist wrote on the 'road map' he gave me. I didn't bother to tell him I've been playing the song since the late 70s.
It's nice to be missed! I'm around, kinda busy. Haven't been in this thread too much recently so now I feel like I have a lot of catching up to do.
I guess I'll update; things here are pretty good. I'm auditioning this afternoon for a new country band that claims to be working, I'd like a little extra cash for my efforts now and then, and since I was recently forced to learn to play a 5-string I figure I can cash in on a new skill
. We'll see how it goes. My track record with auditions is pretty good but my track record with liking bands I audition for is less good. So I've been busy this week working on their audition songs. And that is all. Everyone in the S household is healthy and happy, even all four dogs. My husband was supposed to play a last-minute show today but there's fire nearby so the event was cancelled. Bummer but he's secretly happy as he experiences a lot of anxiety when he isn't fully prepared, and they called him just a few days ago.
And that is all the news here. Now I'm off to read how everyone else is doing.

It's a super common attribution for sure. Also a super common choice at open mics and jams around here. The non-jazz guitarists are often good for that, Autumn Leaves, Mercy, Mercy, Mercy, and "Girl From Ipana."(sic) If that one guitar guy's in the house substitute "Billy's Bounce." The first chair guy from the local big band kills on BB.
One of my originals bands also tosses in a few covers when we need to fill time, and this is one of them. I have an insanely good time playing this song for some reason. People do still love it!

Never one to be out-grumpied
Monday sees me first for my weekly coffee date (woo woo), off to the doctor's and then off to the hospital where I have a hot date with Ultrasound. Hm good band name there, likely taken. The scan is to confirm everything is working to spec, not to see if there's anything out of spec. Was just there a week and a half ago for an x-ray that confirmed that is working to spec but dang sure hurt for a good while.
Now what's all this about five string and country - what we hears is New Country needs a fiver. No complaints about a bit of extra coin, hey

IIRC it was one of the first two or three charts I was given by one of the jazzbo guitarists I used to hang with in VT. The title I usually hear it called by is maybe not so TB-friendly though.
Since the blues guitarists get so tired of hearing the same five "jazz" tunes at open mikes around here (pot-kettle-black much?) I decided to shake up the words to Autumn Leaves. I do it as an intro with just bass and drums, hip-hop beat:

Yes, apparently a fiver is mandatory standard issue if you're going to play New Country. I was given four songs to learn and almost all of them contain notes below the low E. One has a droning low D throughout much of the song, and another one has a slide down to the low C that's very prominent in the song. The others are passing tones that probably could be transposed up and no one would notice much. But the studio cats are apparently going in there with these things to record, so we're hearing a lot of that in the genre.
I know nothing much about New Country but I'm enjoying playing stuff outside my usual fare. It sort of takes me all the way back to the 70's, when there were a lot of bands coming up through rock that had a country edge to them, like the Eagles. It's definitely not 1-5-8 stuff, and some of the arrangements are tricky, but it's not terribly hard to play. Plus, there are a ton of harmonies and I love to harmonize.
Here's my favorite of the four songs I was asked to learn. This one really doesn't use the B string much, but I am in love with this song. I fail to hear much "country" in it, though.
