GHS Balanced Nickel strings

I noticed these strings are a bit cheaper at BSO but they're about 1 1/2 weeks away from being in stock...fyi. I'll probably wait and buy from Jason.

Do they have a strong fundamental like a good set of flats?

Maybe not exactly the same, but strong. I was interested in these strings because, as much as I like flatwound strings, I often want something a little brighter, a little more open. But still deep and fundamental. Half-round wasn't quite what I was after. Pressurewound was closer, but still too roundwound-ish. Labella quarter-round strings were good, but they discontinued them. These GHS Balanced Nickels are pretty much exactly what I hoped for. (I like the sound of these better than the quarter-rounds.)

This is exactly my expectation as well. Now that I've found the Round Core Boomers for my J, I'm hoping the combination of pure nickel warmth and round core on my P would bring it a little closer back to the flatwound-ish sonic flavor while retaining some of the roundwound qualities.

I’d really like to know what you guys think of them? They’ve just come in stock over here and they’re the same price as Labella FL-MUS flatwounds bar £1. I love my Labella flats but I feel they aren’t that versatile. They are 43-104. The short scale GHS Balanced Nickels are 44-106, but are wound on a round core. Do you think there will be a noticeable difference in tension, and would they suit the Mustang better?

"Round core" doesn't necessarily mean "loose and floppy" like some round core strings tend to be. I've been trying out the Round Core Boomers on my J for the last four weeks and I find them positively firm without being uncomfortably stiff. I would expect the same with these BNs.

There will be huge difference in tension, with the GHS being very noticeable lower. You will have to check your neck relief and adjust your truss rod accordingly. Yes, I think they will suit your Fender Mustang much much better. With such a radical change you would be wise to go through a total setup.

Oh man, I step away from Talk Bass for a few weeks and GHS goes & sucks me back in.
Round core? Pure nickel? Well balanced?

The $ is leaping out of my wallet with joy.

Seriously though, I can't wait to try these out!

@Jon Moody, were you playing the 44-106 set in the video on the GHS product page?

Yep, that was the 4M-NB set.

I have a set of the 5L-NB set (40-56-76-101-126) on my Willcox Saber VL and the 4700 set (44-60-80-106 short scale) on my Hofner in the office currently. They sound great, and the B string is really nice.
