GHS Balanced Nickel strings

Sounds like I misinterpreted what you said in our previous conversation. I was imagining a device that measures the actual pulling weight of a string as it is tuned up to pitch.

Sorry, folks, you can disregard what I said in post# 78.

They definitely make those; I've visited a couple of our dealers who have made them.

However, all that gives you is the end result; the tension of the string tuned to pitch. It doesn't give you the mass of the string, so when someone says "What happens if I tune a .045 down to F" you don't have the information to use in the formula to calculate the result.

I weigh the strings using a scale (if that's what you want to call a "special tension-weighing device"), and get hard numbers for the mass. Then, using the scale length and pitch, we find out the tension.

They definitely make those; I've visited a couple of our dealers who have made them.

I certainly hope that the sales numbers on Pressurewounds are great enough that GHS keeps them in their product line. I came late to the "Pressurewounds Party", and they are without a doubt the BEST strings I've played in regards to tone, tension, and lifespan. @Jon Moody

The Pressurewounds will always be my #1 go-to strings.

Plus, the Boomers, the RC Boomers and now the new Balanced Nickels... I really don't think I will need to be looking anywhere else for my string needs any more.
 
Yes i suspect D'Addario and Kalium also just carefully measure the unit weight, then use that and scale and pitch in the equation to get tension.

To go into deeper detail, that string equation is based on an assumption of a 'perfect string' with zero stiffness.
However no need to be alarmed by this as bass strings are actually, in terms of this assumption, very flexible, their stiffness has a quite insignificant effect on the tension result.

If you think about how wobbly a bass string is when you dangle it from your hand, and how easy it is to bend very slightly in your hands, there is almost no resistance. Compare this resistance to the huge tension that is applied when on the instrument, it is fairly insignificant.

How a linear object vibrates depends on its tension and its stiffness and the balance of those.

At one extreme is a vibraphone with zero tension and high stiffness (solid metal bars), when struck the 'restoring force' acting against the deformation of the bar is entirely due to stiffness.
The frequencies of the harmonics are very different from those of a guitar string.

At the other extreme is guitars with very low stiffness and high tension, when struck the 'restoring force' acting against the deformation of the string is almost entirely due to tension.
The frequencies of the harmonics are what we consider 'harmonic', being 1x 2x 3x 4x 5x ... the fundamental frequency.

So what is the effect of stiffness on the tension of a (bass)guitar string?
Stiffness acts as additional 'restoring force' and therefore raises pitch. To return to the desired pitch you then have to reduce tension a little. So the actual tension at desired pitch is a slightly lower than the result of the basic equation, but not by a significant amount and not enough to be bothered with when calculating tensions. Scientific equipment to accurately measure stiffness is rare and expensive, whereas unit weight just requires an accurate weighing machine, weigh 34" of string and divide by 34.

Stiffness in a guitar string also shifts the frequencies of the harmonics, causing 'inharmonicity', that 'out of tune with itself' tone you get when playing a B or E string on the highest frets. Playing a fat string on the high frets effectively raises the stiffness, and therefore pitch, meaning the scale length needs to be increased to acheive the desired pitch, this is why we offset the saddle position away from the nut to intonate a string, and the offset is larger for stiffer strings. As you play up the frets the intonation offset becomes larger relative to the length of the string, to provide an increasing compensation.
 
I have placed an order for the 44-106 set. I cannot promise a review as tantalizingly crafted as what @Linnin writes, but I will share my take on the strings. :)
Thanks for your kind remarks, but I am looking forward to reading your review. I only run rounds on my Jazz and I just put on a fresh set of GHS Bass Boomers, so it will be four to six months before I can give the Balanced Nickels a go. I really liked D'Addario's EXL-170BT's and these new GHS strings are in that very same ball park and would make for a good comparison & contrast piece.

My initial plan was to try the Round Core Boomers when I'm done test driving the regular Boomers that are on my P right now. But now I'm tempted to try these first as they have three things going for them - pure nickel, round core and balanced tension.

I would probably go with the light set (40-101) as they seem perfect for me at 43 lbs. each.

I oscillate between flats and rounds on my Precision bass. If the described "deep, focused tone" is what I am imagining, I expect to like these a lot.
 
I'm very curious to read some reviews of these strings. And if anyone (perhaps @Jon Moody?) could weigh in on how these differ from Pressurewounds in tone and feel, that would be great.

I had to throw a set of Pressurewounds on a bass for this weekends gigs, as I haven't played them in a minute.

In terms of feel, Pressurewounds are going to be smoother as the Balanced Nickels are a roundwound string. It's like comparing any nickel-plate roundwound to the Pressurewounds.

In terms of tone, the Pressurewounds are gonna be a bit brighter, snappier, etc.. due to the nickel-iron over the pure nickel of the Balanced Nickels, which are very smooth sounding.

According to the updated "brightness scale" on the GHS website, the BNs are supposed to be brighter than the PWs.
