Proper forest management ensures there will be more trees. It's not like they don't grow back. It's a renewable resource.

There was quite a push back by the "tree huggers" against Weyerhaeuser Corp. a few decades ago. The tree huggers were protesting clear cutting practices employed by Weyerhaeuser that destroy forests thereby ending the possibility of re-growth. Protesters were set up (framed) and prosecuted for crimes they didn't commit, and were sent to prison. One protester lost their life. In the end the truth came out, and thanks to the tree huggers, the practice of clear cutting has to the best of my knowledge been abandoned here in the US. So sometimes (occasionally), our legal system does work. That's better then your guilty retroactively until proven innocent. Yes?
Ebony isn't grown in the US. It's a critically endangered species that can only be logged in Cameroon at present. Rosewood is also in deep trouble as a species. Stuff like maple and walnut are renewable and farmed responsibly in the US, but this isn't possible everywhere, where laws are lax, and where a particular species takes forever to grow.

Thanks. Good to know.

Just found this old pic from 2010:

US guitar maker Gibson CEO Henry Juszkiewicz smashes an old style Gibson guitar as he unveils the "Gibson Firebird X" during a press conference at the Hard Rock Cafe in New York, October 28, 2010. Gibson unveiled its new guitar with buit-in effects, controls, tuner and bluetooth that the legendary guitar maker said amount to a revolution in the music industry.

Oh, the irony...

That guitar is clearly made of balsa wood so Mr. Burns could swing it :D

I don't know where you live but there is still a lot of clear cutting going on where I live.

I suspect BJ was reminded about the non-disclosure agreements he (likely) signed but neglected to read while employed by Gibson.

Or maybe there wasn't an NDA and Gibson's goons are threatening BJ with a suit anyway. What average individual can afford to defend themselves against the resources of a big corporation even if they are within their rights?

Listening to BJ, he didn't seem to think that the video was a big deal nor did he consider what Gibson might think. If Gibson asked him to take it down, he would. The interview guy and a bunch of others were running the video and getting ad revenue, those probably got (and deserved) nastygrams from Gibson's attorneys.

A bit of a "broad brush" painting here...

While some Ebony species are endangered and even banned from being exported, Macassar Ebony still evades such a status.

I don't know about Macassar but some forms of 'X' where X is a type of wood turn out to not even be the same genus as X. AFAIK an example is sapele which is sometimes referred to as mahogany whereas it's just like mahogany but is a different genus.

In this case, Macassar belongs to the same family/genus as the endangered varieties (Diospyrus).

Texas Ebony would fit your description, though.

LOL

This other pic from the same event looks like a great platform for memes...

Good 'ol Henry. He's definitely to be credited for starting the trend of rich stubble-headed executives walking among us wearing denim and leather and thinking that we're fooled for even a second.

The Firebird X introduction event, where he smashed the cheapest possible not-quite-an SG, was about as rock'n'roll as a cold-handed doctor complaining that the proctology exam he's presently conducting is delaying his tee off or an aggressively religious aunt thinking that flashing "I love you" in ASL somehow insinuates deaf people with Satan.

Is it me or does that headstock not say Gibson or Epiphone?
