Have had a few Gibsons in my life. Always built well. This one is up in the classifieds now, 1978 Ripper:
The neck pickup shut measure around 30 kOhms. It is usually pretty loud. If it needs a rewind, you might want to check out Curtis Novak's wqebsite. Great guy and great work.
Everything checks out....Pickup rates at 28 Ohms wiring all original untouched.
Just not sounding like my old EB2D which i imagined it would be like in terms of muddiness/bassiness...it isn't
Bought this today. Found it in Sam Ash. She's got lots of dents and dings, but plays great. I've played fretless before, but never a Ripper. Loved the sound in the store immediately. Took it home, liked it even more. Invalid Link Removed
That looks exactly like one I sold a few years ago. Great bass. I've regretted it ever since. Is there what looks like a glue run at the heel of the neck?
EDIT- I checked withe some pictures I had from when I sold it. I'm 100% certain that's the one.

It's the exact bass! I'm enjoying it. Whoever had it last did a good job with the setup, too. Of course that may have been you.
Yeah, unless the dude I sold it too changed anything, that was all me. I bought it from Atomic Music in Beltsville, MD. It had rounds on it and the setup was horrific. After I got it, I threw some Chromes on her, set it up properly, and it became my #1 for a few years.
It always played nice with low action. And like you said, it sounded awesome. It was my first Gibson, and once I discovered short scales, it just wasn't getting any playing time.
I stumbled upon the original strap buttons a little while back. If I can find them again, I'll PM you so I can send them to you.

I'm thinking about investing in an RD bass. But the prices I see on them seem to have a wide range. Can anyone tell me what I should be paying for an RD? Right now there are several on EBay. One Krist Novoselic for $939, the others are all Artist basses (late 70's) ranging from $1600 to $2000 and one at $3000.

Sorry, but not alot. I narrowed the year down to '75 or 6, due to those being the first years they made them fretless, and the pick up cover would be different if it was any later. But, I'm afarid I don't have much to offer as far as history goes, other than I bought in 2003 or 4 and sold it about 2 years ago.
All of the "battle scars" and most wear came before me, as I babied it. I was't gigging much when I was playing it the most, and I'm pretty crazy about taking care of my basses. I did do alot of jamming and writing with it. And, I got alot of compliments and interest from other musicians on the few gigs I did play with it.

I have seen the Novoselic's go for around $800 used, but that has been a while. The Artist seem to hover between $1500-$2000 or higher depending on condition and finish. Standards seem to stay closer to $1000 depending on condition. I bought a used Novoselic and it is a great bass. I modified it tho because I didn't care for the sound of the stock pickups.
