I really like the looks of those in black. The stock photos of the Blonde just don't do the bass any favors.

Always did like the look of a Victory. No idea what they sound or play like. Maybe one day get a deal on one. Currently badgering the crap out of a local guy for his '64 EB1.
Do bear in mind that there's no such thing as a '64 EB-1. They haven't shown up until late '69

Correct, and these are referred to as "EB" (no number of any kind) while the "reissue" was known as EB-1. Given the Gibson's serial number mess, it's easy to make a mistake if one is basing their estimate on the serial alone.
New at "this Gibson game". It had the "back- facing" tuning pegs and looked well worn.
He sd thought was a '64. I assumed older because of the machines but didn't want to
haggle in his favor since he doesn't really want to part w it but needs the money.
I'll see if I can get a ser# if anyone knows a dating site.

The original Gibson EB with the banjo tuners was produced from 1953 to 1958.
The brown bakelite covered pickup also is a single coil sidewinder instead of the more common humbucker found on the EB-0. Some say it has a different sound from the later humbucker but I think winding times were not standard so the sound can vary between examples.

I've got a 54...Very different pickup from the humbucker..still very deep and bassy
Yeah my Melodymaker is too. Had flats on it since I got it which finally started looking bad
and haven't replaced them since. Anybody suggest a short scale bright set of flats?

A completely out-of-the-blue NFMGD (New For Me Gibson Day) here...
A 2013 EB5 which was absolutely NOT on my shopping list BUT I've been toying with the idea of getting a fiver that would not cost an arm and a leg for some time now, and this little guy checked the vast majority of the boxes.
It's still way too early for anything close to a serious review of it, but my initial impressions are positive.
The bass sounds very transparent - a trait that I've found in the 2017 version as well - and plays well with effects from what I can tell. Quite a few usable sounds, without finagling too much with the controls, and the coil splitting on these is a thing of beauty.
It is *very* light - possibly too light for someone who'd play it on a strap unlike myself - but since I'll be playing seated if I ever end up going back to performing "live", the neck-dive potential doesn't phase me one bit.
Whether I'll be able to adjust to the neck profile remains to be seen. This was the very reason why I stopped playing fives back in the mid 90s, and I owned some *very* nice ones at the time...
A setup-to-my-liking is in order, but that will have to wait for a few weeks since I'm travelling overseas in several days and won't be able to put aside the time to do any of that good stuff...
It's been a long rainy day and I'm getting tired now, but just wanted to share the news with the fellow club members here...
