On grabbers, how far down is the heel of the neck in the bass, compared to the lower cutaway? Also if anyone could measure the length and width of the grabber pickgaurd it would be much appreciated. Thank you.

I know it's a long shot, but if anyone here has a set of pickguard-mount Ripper pickups or pickup covers they would be willing to sell, please PM me.
I'll see about some measurements when I have time. I do have a PDF of a grabber body with measurements if I can find it.

Been mapping the wiring of my Ripper. It is significantly different from the 1974 diagram I got online. One setting (3) is parallel, out-of-phase. I don't have much use for it, so I will try to change that one to bridge only. Currently, (1) is series in-phase, (2) is neck only, and (4) is parallel, in-phase. I'm going to try to keep those intact. We'll see how it goes...

Another difference I see is there is no cap in series with the inductor on the "Q-filter" tone control.

Indeed it is, i've been asking him about what he'd change (he had a Ripper back when i was born and said it was the closest he'd get to owning something in the grabber family), so once i got evertyhing i needed, i started searching for parts and it has come to be after a year of talking with him about it
. Also, the fact that he's now moving to ottawa it'll be my going away gift to him. Did you have it re-wired to that configuration or was it done previously. Because the original positions are: 1-series, in phase, 2-Bridge only, 3-Parallel in phase, 4-series out of phase.

I bought it in 1983 and the wiring was essentially not working. I had a local tech rewire it and that was what he did. I didn't have any idea what "stock" was supposed to be and it sounded much better so I just went with it. I never really had a use for the (parallel) out of phase position.
Good news is I was successful! Now position 3 is bridge only, as I wanted. The rewire was simple because position 3 was already in parallel, so I just had to isolate one point to disconnect the neck pickup on that one setting. The hard part was that it was the nexus of three wires, so I had to move all those to a neighboring point on position 4 that it had been connected to. That preserved all the connections for position 4, which is parallel, in phase on my bass.
Anyway, the bridge setting is good and about what I expected: focused, kinda lanky and a bit weaker in the low end but still a basically good strong bass sound, unlike the thin out of phase tone I had before.
Almost feels like a NBD, since I have a completely new setting on this bass. Now I really like all four settings!

By the way, the "neck only" position, which is not part of the stock settings, is an excellent sound and probably the one I've played and recorded most. Too bad most Rippers don't have it.

Have to say, I'm very glad I rewired the Ripper to have a bridge-only setting. It's a winner. Glad to add that sound. It's kinda like getting another bass, only cheaper and without taking up more space!

What string length do you guys have on your gibson grabbers (G1-G3)? Preferably the vintage ones with string through Flyguitars says extra long scale, but i don't think it'll be necessary for the one i've built, so i'm thinking long scale but then again i don't wanna be screwed
