Gibson Grabber/Ripper/G-3 club

What string length do you guys have on your gibson grabbers (G1-G3)? Preferably the vintage ones with string through Flyguitars says extra long scale, but i don't think it'll be necessary for the one i've built, so i'm thinking long scale but then again i don't wanna be screwed

Our guitar player plays bass in a different band and he has '76 Ripper and he uses regular scale 50-110 Ernie Balls.

EDIT: It's the vintage bridge - non-three-point and through the body.

I tried using Ernie Balls thru-body on my Ripper, the taper doesn't reach the nut...

You know what, now that you mention it, he mumbled something about the last two sets of strings not making the nut and got a set of D'Addario 55-110 size in the longer scale.

In any case, i've gotten long scale strings and am stringing up my one off grabber bass right now.

well the scale is relative to the brand... some long scale are 38" (DR e.g.), some extra long are smaller

Yes true, but my long scales are daddarios while it would seem that i'd need 37" length string from ball to taper, i guess it didn't after some stretching of strings hows your ripper situation?

Using La Bella extra long ones at the moment. Tried Ken Smith before, and gonna try Daddario Pro Steels extra long next

You should consider stretching the strings, it might help with the situation to gaving the strings sit in the nut.

Unstamped reverse tuners, old style single holes for the string through. Sadly it does not thave the original pickguard (replacement from WD) and someone rewired it, not using the original switch and pots.

Obviously someone tried to get the settings of the original even with another switch, but I suspct a problem.

One of the settings (i guess the series setting) is a lot louder than the other 3. Especially both other settings with both pickups on do really have a weak output, even when compared to the Epiphone Jack Casady at the 50 ohm setiing.

That leads to some questions and I hope someone can help:

1. Is that lack of volume /output normal or may that be a mistake in the wiring?

2. Is there a source for good rotary switches or even original replacements?

3. Did anyone try ghs precision flats on a ripper? Do they fit or are they too short?

First off, congrats on the Ripper bass. Very nice!

1. I'd say it's due to the fault in the wiring scheme. volume wise, some should sound lower than others but that's because of the rotary switch. Position one is both in series, in phase which compared to position 3 in parallel in phase is weaker output, but it's still loud enough. Position 2 would be just the bridge pickup which is usually weak output on any bass with it's bridge pup selected only, and position 4 would be botn in series out of phase. It's a weaker output but unique sound to the bass.

2.If you want original replacemnet, surf eBay. IF you just need to replace it, i'd suggest all parts, http://www.allparts.com/EP-4371-000-4-Position-Rotary-Switch_p_1413.html 4 position rotary switch so you can get the original wiring back and sounding good as new.

3. i can't imensely help you with that one, i'm sure someone will.

I'd then add neck only and mybe soemting like inner coils in series or somethin like that.

With the also non.stock switch currently in my bass I believe thatthere is just the series seting in phase and the rest is off. It's all too thin and trebbly.

Yes, the Long Plus ones will fit. Those: [Invalid or Expired Link Removed]

BTW, this issue is only if you want to string through the body. If you string from the bridge you can get away with any standard scale. But I think it's cool to string through the body :>

The gibson ripper reissue in 2009 had a 6 position selector and, i have no clue if anyone ever decided to bite the bullet on those ones. I`d suggest having the original wiring adding the neck pickup only and either like a mute.

Is anybody here with a 2009 RI who can take a picture of this selector? It would helb getting the right one, since there is a lot of bs on the market.
