Gibson Les Paul Bass

Hey,

So recently I've got my eye on a Gibson Les Paul,

Im not too interested in the new ones, I really like the look and feel of the old school ones after playing one the other week..

I'd like to know peoples thoughts on the les paul bass??

And if anyone happens to be selling one in the UK, get in touch!

Hey,

I have an LP Triumph that I bought new in NYC in '72. This
is still one of my favorite players and still gig with this on
occasion.

One of the more perfect necks I've ever played... no dead spots,
and totally balanced from fret to fret, note to note.

My only short scale at the moment, and hav just recently
thrown on some flats... sounds great.

I have played many styles through the years, and this bass
has been able to support them all. Others have come and gone,
but this baby will always be mine.

my triumph is probably the best sounding bass I own. very even across the strings and you can get a multitude of sounds from it. you can even get it to sound like a fender, if that's your goal. it's a bit heavy but its sound makes up for that.

my son has a '94 LPB1 which isn't quite as versatile in terms of variety of sounds but is a dream to play and always sounds good in a mix. I like it so much that when he moves out of the house, I plan on buying one for myself.

LPs are probably one of the most underrated basses ever made. I don't think you could go wrong with one from any era.

I have an Early 90's Les Paul that ROCKS!

It's Passive, and is for all intents & purposes a Thunderbird with a Les Paul body. Very Sweet Player. And I have recently added Bartolini pickups. HEAVEN!!!

My LP Triumph bass.

mahogany neck/brazilian rosewood fingerboard
one piece honduran mahogany body/one (thick) piece honduran mahogany top

it sounds fat! very fat! :D

I had around a 91-92 Les Paul Deluxe basses with the carved maple top, chrome tbird pickups, Bart preamp, ebony board. Cherry burst. Basically a Les paul Custom but a bass. This was before Gibson started chambering the bodies, it must of weighed about 15 lbs! Sounded like a house getting knocked down, got rid of it eventually cause the weight was killing me. Probably the biggest sounding bass I've ever used. I've never heard or played a Les Paul bass that wasn't pretty decent.

To the OP, I've got a mid 90s LP bass (LPB-3, I think) with the chrome TB+ pups, not a slab mahogany like the red one above, but mahogany with a maple top. My main axe for hard rock. It kills other basses and peels the paint off walls. Every band I've used it with tells me, "Forget that other axe -- USE THAT ONE!" One guitar player nicknamed her The Hammer and it stuck.

I am a dedicated Fender guy, but this bass will never leave my possession. They can be tough to find, but many are great basses.

With a friend, another GREAT Gibson bass.

Yeah, I too am a fan of the Gibby bass. I love my T-Bird. And not to hijack this thread, but my next purchase will also be a Les Paul Bass. I'm looking at the later '90s to 00's ones. Can anyone tell me what years exactly the Les Paul basses had the TB Plus pickups? Based on my love affair with my Thunderbird I want those instead of the Barts. Thanks...

In the mid-90's, I lusted over a LP Deluxe bass in Vintage Sunburst. Never got one though. I did have a more basic Heritage Cherry one (similar to the one posted earlier in the thread). It was okay, but I sold it because I preferred the passive Fenders. But those Deluxe models were friggin' gorgeous.

Just how much did the '70's Les Paul basses weigh? Are we talking over ten pounds? Twelve?

I see that the pickups were low-z humbuckers. How do they sound compare to a conventional Fender P or J pickup?

When did Gibson add the Triumph designation? Was it marked on the trussrod cover?

Are the '90's era Les Paul basses completely different animals?

I am a dedicated Gibby Bass player and will not play any other... My current players are:

2006 LPB standard in Vintage Sunburst
2006 TBird Studio in Cherry Finish
2009 Limted Run Grabber II
2009 Limited Run Ripper II

Would not give them up for anything

Ah, yes. The great charm of TB is the incoherent and/or juvenile rant (usually just slightly on point....)
