The early Les Pauls are the best - I have a 90's model - take a look here at my pic of it. I just posted it on here; its not for sale but if you see one here in England, grab it......... they dont come up very often!!!!!!!

I've played a lot of different bass guitars in my life. And I think the 1969 Gibson Les Paul Bass (aka Professional or Recording) is the best of them all. Hands down. Really.

It is really versatile.
It has a killer tone.
It has the deepest and tightest lows
It has the most chrystal clear highs without ever sounding harsh.
The neck feels really comfortable.
It balances perfectly.

Well just got a 2005 Gibson Les Paul Bass and love the sound.If I could only find online how to adjust the controls and selector switch to produce the sound I want....info is limited

4 Knobs does not make sense to me what does what..Any ideas????

I agree with the other post play what sounds good you play......I just happen to love the way the Gibson Les Paul sounds.....

I know its not a Gibson, but I have an Epiphone Les Paul 5 string being delivered tomorrow. I am curious to hear how it sounds. Its V-V-T with a 5 way selector switch that apparently works for each pickup. Anyway, I have already ordered a Bart 3 band preamp and will probably switch out the stock electronics and maybe pickups, depending on the sound of this beast tomorrow. I am hopeful this thing is a good player so I can put it to good use. Otherwise I'll probably end up flipping it. I've seen a couple of Gibson 5ers, but does anybody have any more definitive information?

The idea that Gibson has been historically negligent towards bass and bassists is just plain unfair. Unlike Fender, whose bass portfolio still consists essentially of variations on two models that were designed more than half a century ago, Gibson has constantly innovated in bass design. I am no expert, but off the top of my head I can think of at least ten distinctly different Gibson model types:
EB-1; EB-2; EB-0/3; LP; LP Signature; Ripper/Grabber/G-3; TB; Explorer; Victory; RD
True, only one of these (EB-3 in late 60s/early 70s) has ever won anything like mass acceptance. But no-one can say they haven't tried.

Nice top on that. I got one of those too (a '96) and I've since gone with the chrome look instead. I found Gibson imprinted NOS Schaller tuners on ebay to keep it correct. I also just changed the pickupes out - I went with Schaller 8-pole bassbuckers with chrome covers. Need a new pic of that but here's the look when I bought it.

does anyone here know how to identify a les paul bass i just bought? its an archtop with binding, has the toggle with a tune a matic type bridge instead of the three point. honeyburst. cant find a serial number help online. thx

Guys- if you find someone trolling a thread, please send a post report. We get thousands and thousands of posts a day, so at our best us mods are still going to miss a ton of stuff. Post reports let us take care of troll posts quickly, rather than finding them days later and having to clean up both them and a ton of response posts.

It finally happened!
This past weekend I swung a deal and traded a couple of basses I no longer used very much for a '74 LP Recording in excellent condition that looks identical to the one in aquateen's post.
I have been wanting to get one of these for a looooong time and it finally worked out. No pics right now, but it should land in my house in a few days.:D

I am very very psyched!!!:hyper:

I picked up a NOS LP bass just a few weeks back (oz importer still has a few of them).. Absolutely love it! Except it appears the pickups are single coils, even though Gibson spec them as being humbuckers, TB+ humbuckers to be precise.

They hum like solo'd jazz pups, when one is turned upside down though, goes dead quiet.

Even stranger, trying out 3 of these in the shop.. They ALL did it, seems maybe Gibson may have had a run which had the coils wound wrong? Still waiting to hear back from Gibson about this.
