Gig bags and storage?

All of my basses fit on a pair of Hercules stands.

I never thought about it that way before, but since Hercules makse a stand for 6 instruments, I could buy a bunch more basses and still fit them all on two stands. "Of course, dear, I'll be responsible - I won't buy any more basses than can fit on two stands..."

This has actually been a very interesting read for me! I currently own 4 basses - none worth more than $500 tops. But I've always preferred hard cases. Right now I own 2 hard cases and 1 (good) gig bag, but I wish I owned 4 cases really. I think it's my own clumsiness that keeps me using the cases. So I'm curious why the love for gig bags? I use both and it doesn't SEEM like a gig bag is all that much easier to schlep around than a case to me. I don't actually transport my basses much though - mostly just to weekly practice.

I CAN see the advantage of having wall hangers though. I just don't have a dedicated room to put them in and I don't think wifey would appreciate that they add so much to the decor and ambiance of the living/TV room.

I have almost all gig bags and trying to figure out the best way to store my basses. I suppose I can buy more stands and just leave them out.

How do you do it?

I use the 5 or 7 instrument stands in my man cave so I can grab any bass that I need at any time. Wall hangers are also nice.

I have a bunch of cases stuffed in the corner of my basement and they never get used unless I ship a bass.

I have my main one on a stand and the rest vertical in my closet in either cases, gig bags or double gig bags.

I might take out a few more and use my triple guitar stand since I'm getting the itch to play some of my others again.

Luckily for me, i only have 5 basses.
Usually, four of them are in stands in a niche of my livingroom while the fifth is still in the gigbag from the last gig/rehearsal.

I'm with you there. I've lost count of how many times having a hard case saved me heartache when toting basses around. The only gig bags I have are because that's what was supplied with the bass.

I keep my basses hanging in my Man Cave on Hercules wall hangers. They are like wall art and easily available for me to pick them up and play them daily. It seems as though I practice alot more with this setup than I did when keeping them in their case.

Gig bags all with identical tuners extra strings etc. This way I just grab a a bag and go.

I only have 2 basses and 1 stand, right now. The bass I play more sits on the stand, and the other gets stored in the gig bag.

Admittedly I have too many basses and a few guitars but for the most part they are out on stands in the studio or living room and have a few scattered thru the house including the bath room "Stink Ray". I do keep a couple of collectibles in cold storage in hard cases. I do have OEM hard cases for most and a few generic hard cases as well as 7-8 gig bags for grab and go. I still have my old bass trunk from my touring days, a well used Anvil for a Fender Rhodes Suitcase 88 case with room for the keyboard and speaker, works great for basses and I picked it out of a junk pile when I left Showco to go on tour myself.

Thanks for asking this question! Just yesterday I was trying to figure out the best way to store my basses , as they have been in cases or gig bags in my closet. I only have one or two out at a time. Another thing I'm having trouble with his how to figure out which bass is in each case or bag, without opening it (I have one less case than I have basses, so they seem to "rotate"). I was trying to figure out if putting some sort of removable label on each case would make sense. I'm going to look at racks, too.

I'm down to four instruments: an acoustic guitar, two strats and a bass.

I hang them all on the wall. I strongly believe that instruments benefit from continuous exposure to air, flexing with the seasons. But the main reason is that I play them more when I can just grab them at will.

I should add that a usual guitar stand isn't smart for an offset body like jazzes have... my James Johnston sig took a spill a few months back So the Hercules hanging type, wall hangers, or the link above are what I'll stick to from now on to be safe.

Main player on a stand, DB in the corner in my living room, both have nice-ish gig bags. Backup in a hard case because it came with and 2 non-working beaters in $20 gig bags, because I'm cheap.

If my instruments aren't right at hand, I practice much less and lose skill quickly.

my drafty old house in NYC has compromised more than 1 neck. I leave one bass in a hardcase and 1 in a monocase. i learned the hard way.
