Gig bags for JMJ Mustang

I have a Gator ProGo (tight, but functional) gig bag that works for my JMJ but a new semi-hollowbody -and a little fragile- guitar just stole that bag.

I could get another ProGo, but what else is there? There's a much cheaper Fender bag built for specifically for short scales, but a reviewer at Amazon said it doesn't fit. Huh? Fender would make a short scale bag that doesn't fit their most popular short scale design?

I'd like the Fender bag as it seems like enough protection as the Gator is good, but overkill. I think I'll need interior length of at least 42.5".

I have an American Performer Mustang, and it fits in a Strat gigbag. Pretty sure its the same size as the JMJ, but he would of course know better.

I'm not home right now, and I haven't used it for a while - but I don't remember it being a tight fit. Only short scale I have that's a tight fit for a guitar bag is my Hofner Ignition Club.

I also have a JMJ and I use a Gator progo guitar gig bag for it. I also recently acquired another Mustang bass, and a second gig bag to go with it; I can confirm that the Fender FBSS 610 short scale bass gig bag fits no problem.

Is the FBSS-610 a semi-rigid bag? Does it stay standing up after the bass is removed?

No, it has decent padding but I'd not define it semi-rigid. The gator is better from this point of view

I made it rigid with a bendable planning rod from Lowe's.

I am waiting to try a MONO vertigo for a jazzbox. The JMJ will apparently fit - although I have been told in the past "it will fit"- then reality proves them wrong! (MONO cs actually told me it would fit a standard guitar bag but it was a very tight fit and defeated the protection of the floating design.

I've got a bag that came with a Serek bass that works fine. Otherwise I just use the Fender ones that came with them, even though they are big. There must be a good solution, I just haven't researched at all.

I use a Mono electric guitar sleeve for my 76 and JMJ Mustangs. Works great, and has a low profile.

In the “official” thread for your signature mustang, you stated that you made this instrument for players that perform and record music, rather than collectors etc. I have to say that you and Fender knocked it out of the park with this bass. However, as someone who has his bass with him almost daily, the stock fender bag does not cut it for pro and semi-pro work IMHO. That’s ok, even without the bag we are getting A LOT of bass for a very reasonable price. Thanks for the recommendation on the Serek bag. I can also attest that the Gator Pro Go (without the bottom pad) is a great fit and very high quality. The Gator GB-4G Jazzmaster gigbag is also a fit. Decent bag for under $80.

The first two pics are the cheaper Gator GB-4G Jazzmaster model. I just want to reiterate that the standard electric guitar version will not fit… It has to be the jazzmaster bag on this model. The last pic is my bass in the Gator pro-go electric guitar bag. Hope this helps some folks. Thanks again for the great bass Justin, and also for all your input on the forum.

You are right, and yes the stock bag is inadequate. I've queried it with Fender, let's see if they might consider some improvements. Meanwhile I just wanna say that Gator Pro-Go looks really ideal. Obviously would be better if folks didn't have to spend a bunch of $ on a deluxe bag, but that's a massive upgrade.

I guess I see both sides of it because not every potential buyer wants, or needs, the protection of a high-quality gigbag… or the added expense that comes along with it.

But on the other hand, Fender currently sells at least 5 mustang bass models that I’m aware of, which means they should have at least one high quality gigbag designed to fit it. I think the bigger problem is that none of the big dogs in the top-shelf gig bag market are making a case designed especially for a mustang (or any short scale basses) other than Serek. Everything else seems to have to be modified or “made to work”. Luckily the Serek looks great and is priced better than Mono and Gator. That’s the route I would have went if I hadn’t found a used gator at a huge discount.

I bought Sire M series bass gig bag. It is semi-rigid and perfect for my JMJ Mustang. 80 euros.
