Gig w/Ampeg Backline

I just saw The Belle Brigade at Mercury Lounge, and they sounded fantastic with an SVT/fridge backline. Bassist just had a jazz bass going straight in. I guess they had it piping through the sound system despite it being the size of my living room, but it sounded really, really good...with the amp facing forward. I'm sure a sideways setup would have jacked all of the drum mics and vocals (drums were pushed forward since the drummer is a co-frontman and sings on every song).

I used to be 'anti in-ear' monitors, but after using them, I love them. You get the exact mix you want at the level you want and your ears never ever ring (as long as you don't turn it up too loud). It's great too when there's an ambient mic to pick up room/audience sound.

Seriously, though, midrange and higher frequencies from bass amps are seldom problematic in the house, but low frequencies sure can be. Not like guitar amps with all that beamy midrange usually pointed right at the sound person. :D

Very true....beaming guitars are the biggest problem. Could be another arguement for side-washing, no? :)

The bass can cause some interference as well.....that is assuming the foh allows the bass to have harmonics and tone instead of relegating them to the bass frequencies because "it's a bass".

Unfortunately that's all too often true. ;)

I never have any trouble finding a gig. I don't think increased popularity of DJs is due to my PA. It's more likely due to bands that are too loud, too expensive, have bad attitudes and bad repertoires.

The overall mood of this thread reminds me of the 'Army base tours' we used to do in the early 90s'.We would be hired to play Ontario Armed Forces bases for GREAT $$. The overall mood at many shows was similar to this thread: A bunch of males together, with alcohol, with NO females around. This equaled a lot of drunk posturing leading to physical fighting. :eek:

Back in my SUPER LOUD punk rock band days, CB's was one of the rare places we always had an incredibly good stage mix. Oh, and thanks for reminding me I will never be able to play there again and be yelled at by Hilly for simply just loading in. ;) RIP.
