GK growl...

malleable

I played the GK1001RBII through a GK 410NEO today for a few hours. The bass is thick and amazing, which I love. Though, is there always going to be a bit of growl in the stack when there's some volume behind it? I found I never could get a really clean sound. Is this the consensus?

Depends on how you set the Boost and Woofer knobs, but even with those turned down there always seems to be just a little hair on your tone. I like it more than the full wool coat Ampegs give you.

Funny thing...I just got home about an hour ago after stopping at the local music store after trying out a GK 2-10 combo and I have the same thoughts. Played a Marcus Miller Jazz through it and man, it was something for a small combo. Total opposite of an Ampeg sound. I think I am tempted to try out the new 2-12 combo. Afraid I may like a bit TOO much therefore causing GAS!!

The Boost knob is the growl knob, along with setting the input gain high. You can make them totally clean by setting those 2 really low, but it does lose you some output, which you make up by cranking up the master vol.

There is always a hint of GK sound in there but you can get rid of the growl by setting the master full-on, then bring up the input gain just enough to reach your desired volume. You might have to take the Boost just a touch above off to get there, but much of that, and you'll start to get just a bit of that sound in there again.

The Boost knob shines in a band mix. You can manipulate it at certain settings to dirty up the amp by playing harder or clean it up by playing lighter. You might not like it solo'd....that's fine too.. Some have accused them of being "too clean", others "can't get rid of "that sound"".
