GK mb200 ultra light head?

Just for kicks I decided to use the MB200 on Saturday and it sounded absolutely great! We get pretty loud on stage, so I felt like I was pushing it to its limit, but for the most part, it was killer. It certainly made tear down easier at 2:30 AM. It makes me think I might want to pick up a higher powered GK head soon.

I'm another C&W player, but in the Merle/McBride/Yoakam/Loveless/Watson vein, and I'm on pretty much the same track you are. My MB200 sounds incredible through a pair of Avatar B212s -- so good that I bought myself a BL600 as a Christmas present (and waiting until the 25th to open it). I know it's only an incremental improvement, but the MB does run out of dynamics at volumes it was never designed to generate.

I agree with the comment about running out of dynamics. I have to be judicious on when I use the MB200. It does work very well when I use a preamp (like my ZOOM B9) in front of it where I can leave the gain on the amp at 10-11 o'clock and set the overall volume with the preamp. If I am using it by itself, it has to be at a gig where the volume won't get too crazy. That's where the MB500 comes in. I can get a lot more clean volume out of the MB500. When pushed, the MB200 sounds like the MB500 with the boost channel on and up. A nice tone, but no where else to go with it.

MB200 as preamp only, with wet direct out feeding one channel of a QSC RMX-1450, feeding (of all things) a sealed-box fifteen with a Peavey PRO-15 driver. Just to see how G-K-ish the result was. The answer is VERY. There is NO tone loss using the MB as a preamp only. Still heavy/thick, but tight and well-defined -- trademark G-K. Also very quiet.

I second that. My baby is doing double duty as primary home head, and as practice space preamp. I keep a QSC GX3 power amp and two cabs (Avatar 210, Acoustic 115) at the space, and shuttle the 200MB back and forth (not a hardship). I'm still playing with the practice space setup, but so far so good. And I might get a wild hair and throw a third cab in there and power it with the MB200 too. Why not.

Nice setup, AB. I gotta get me a case for my QSC. Sick of pinching my fingers setting it down. Though I've learned a widely spaced folded pair of athletic socks set down where the amp's going to go will prevent that. Provides just enough room. Call me cheap, I don't care. :D
