GK mb200 ultra light head?

This little guy continues to impress. I have both the MB200 and MB500. I've decided that gigs where keeping the volume under control is an issue I will use the MB20 with my Aguilar GS112/112NT stack. Played a small room last night, no PA support for the bass, three guitars and drums in a country/classic rock band. I set the Gain at 2 o'clock, EQ to taste and use the volume on the bass to control the overall sound. Bass was an active MuscMan SUB4. This may be counter to others who usually go wide open volume on the bass, but for me with this amp it works great. A very warm, tubey, full tone and with the EQ and volume on the bass I was able to cop a wide array of tones. I even used the contour switch on some newer country songs.

I guess I can do it with a a cable and leave it in the bag...

Cheater plug, ftw.

Tom,
I guess if all you have to do is either break the ground on the DI or the ground powering the amp...it doesn't matter where you do it. I have never had to think about it because every GK amp I have ever had has had the ground lift...but I have about 10 of those things already so I'll throw one in the bag. Thanks!

I have at least one of those with me at every gig. I'd rather use a ground lift and keep the AC grounded at the plug, but when that is not an option, these little guys often do the trick.

This does work, but I prefer to ground the amp and use a DI lift.

The reason is, there can be other gear on stage you can get a shock from if you're not grounded. It's ALWAYS best to have your amp grounded if it can be. The reason is, you want the amp to have it's own ground, and not risk the potential of YOU being a ground. Remember, the human body is capacitive, so you can also be a "false ground" even if you're not standing barefoot on a conductive surface to ground.

It's much more likely for a ground loop to exist between the circuit the board is on and the stage, than it is for various stage gear go have a ground loop. Not that it can't happen, just less frequent.

IMHO, cheater plugs should ONLY be used for the ultra rare occasion where you have no choice but to plug into a two-pronged outlet, OR, you do have ground loop problems on stage. Not to solve a DI-only ground loop problem.

IMHO/IME

Ideally, yes. But if you don't have a ground lift or another convenient way to break the DI ground loop, and you are supposed to go on in two minutes, and there is still an obnoxious hum coming from the PA... :D

Agreed. As I said, it does work, and I didn't mean to imply it couldn't even be used as a last resort (sorry if that wasn't clear.)

But it really should be a last resort. Grounding problems can be really serious. You're dealing with up to a full 120VAC when you have a ground loop. You don't wanna' mess with that. :)

You mean you don't like that tingly feeling you get in your lips when you approach the mic? :D

I recently joined a modern country band that plays stuff like Lady Antebellum, Miranda Lambert, Luke Bryan...etc and I typically use an SVT-VR with my Bergantino NV610 cab. Just for kicks I decided to use the MB200 on Saturday and it sounded absolutely great! We get pretty loud on stage, so I felt like I was pushing it to its limit, but for the most part, it was killer. It certainly made tear down easier at 2:30 AM. It makes me think I might want to pick up a higher powered GK head soon.

Mingus, you used it with a NV610? That would be awesome. Shows that you really don't need a ton of power if you have cone area.
How did you run the DI? Pre or post EQ? What did you soundguy think of it?
Honestly, I'm a little spoiled with the GK amps and their woofer/2nd volume knob (all the RB series and most of the micro series). It only became an issue when I didn't have it with the MB200. I don't adjust stage volume much, but I don't want to affect the level of what I send the FOH/Monitor if I need to goose it. I want some of the GK coloration as well, so I have always gone post EQ. Not sure what to do here...but there are worse problems to have I guess.

I did use it with a NV610, but I used my JDI instead of the MB200s DI.
