GK MB212 Ordered!

Hey guys - question for the owners.

How is the bottom end on this cab? And the mids? Can you dial out the bottom so it's a more aggressive rock type tone, without tons of bass?

I tried the 2x10 combo and had a very hard time getting aggressive mids and could not dial out the bass much at all. Stayed bassy until the bass knob was almost off and still had a little boom.

Hey Quad....

I don't have this combo, but with the rb series heads, I find I can't run the gain past 11:00. I run with the master at noon, boost at 3, and the gain gets used to control vol until it's at 11. From there, I'll use the master.... but as the master comes up, the boost comes down. That keeps it throaty. You may need to run with the boost a bit lower.... start at noon perhaps.

Boost aboce noon isn't one of y fav GK sounds - not by a long shot. 9:00 to 11:00 is my usual range with an RB II series head. I'm running about noon on an MB2-500 but I haven't logged the hours with the head to be sure yet.

I'm not a combo guy but I have to admit that the MB212 sure sounds attractive!

Glad to hear that the new unit is working properly Yerf! So now that you have one that sounds good, what do you think of it?

I had practice with my band again last night and kept thinking how nice it would've been to have the MB212 sitting behind me instead of a mediocre Peavey 150 watt 15" combo. :( I need to get one of these on order something fierce! I just wish I could play one first. I'm trying to hold out until the local GC gets one in stock.

I was working with an Acoustic 100w 15". Link Removed Worked OK with PA support but...

I'm still getting the MB dialed in, but as far as my practice room goes, it sounds really good. I'm able to get a lot of different tones out of it. Not too bassy and no problems with the horn. The contour button seems to scoop a little too much, but like I say, I'm just in my practice room at non-law enforcement attention levels. :D

Picked up a new MB 210 today from GC. I am am amazed at the sound from such a small lightweight package. When I got it home I plugged in my Bag End S-15D w/ JBL 2226H. With the Bag End, the load drops to 4 ohms so get all 500 watts. The results were incredible. The Bag End really rounds out the overall sound. It is also about the same width. The MB210 fits perfectly on top. At only 33 pounds with such a big sound, GK has a winner here if it holds up under regular weekly gig use. Sounds great with both a jazz and precision. Nuff said.............

Quadzilla,

Since you own both combo's, how would you compare/contrast between the MB 210 and the MB 212? I played an MB 210 at the local GC yesterday and my results were actually pretty similar to rpsands' findings on it. Just a HUGE bottom end that I couldn't seem to dial out without killing off the low end completely. How is the bottom on the MB 212? Is it as big and in your face as the MB 210's? What about the mids? Thanks in advance for the input.

Did you find the mids overly polite too? I just could not coax any upper mid snarliness out at all either which was almost as frustrating.

Hi Zach,

I don't own a MB210 so I can't compare the two. Bottom is nice and full on the 212 w/o being boomy. Mids cut farily well, but not as well as my Berg AE410 did (which was exceptional).

The high mids were kind of laid back. Though I didn't exactly bring the best axe for that kind of testing. I was demo'ing the cab with my 'Wick Corvette Std fretless strung with chrome flats on it. I honestly did like the sound of the MB 210, just not the HUGE bottom end that it had. I do believe that some of the boom can be attributed to the awful room I was in, but surely not all of it.

Quad, thanks for that. For some reason I thought you were the one who had both combos. :( I'm really keen on giving the MB 212 a shot, but I refuse to buy it without giving it a try first.

I know a guy who co-runs a music summit and who puts on these events around the west coast. He also publishes a couple of music magazines. We were talking about amps and I happened to mention the MB212. Apparently he gets all of his amplification equipment from Gallien Krueger and said he could get me an MB212 for wholesale + shipping if I was willing to review it for one of his mags. I'll be getting an MB212 straigt from GK for around $530 shipped. I'm thinking they'll probably be shipping me a good one as well since I'm going to be reviewing it.

I'm stoked! I just sold a Yorkville BM400 combo amp which weighs in at 80 lbs - my back is much happier about 39 lbs!

I got it, has plenty of power, last gig i had pa support with a mackie sub. My complaint is with the direct out, you can't unplug it, take it out by hand once its in as its to close to the casing. You need a key to fit in to release it very annoying if you look at photos you will know what I'm talking about, I would like to contact GK and ask why they made a bone head move like that =-D
