GL L2000(US 90s) vs. Squier P-bass JV

I've been playing a Franken P for years with an old JV neck I love it.

My L-2000 is my favorite bass, so that would get my vote.

And that looks to have the current body shape, so it might be newer than you think. ‘98-‘99 at the earliest.

G&L has better bridge & tuners, and same electronics as the US models. IMO the Squier is not even in the same ballpark.

Personally don’t get the hype of those P basses, it’s a good bass, but the money they are starting to go for is pretty ridiculous, they used to be a good deal because they were good basses for cheap, now it’s far from the case.

I agree with this. The whole point of those Squiers was they were amazing for the money
I had one. Cost me $150. Sold it for $150.
It was a good bass, but it wasn't a $2000+ good bass.
The markup is nuts.

I love how no one is understanding that the Squier is MIJ and vintage, not just some off-the-rack number that you can get anywhere cheap. Though to be fair, the OP doesn't specifically state that, so...

The G&L is more modern design with way more tonal options. It's got a better bridge, an easier to adjust truss rod, and still has the Leo clout.
The MIJ Squier is basically built like an old P bass with the neck-heel truss and bent bridge designs that were addressed and fixed over the years. ANd it only has that one pickup, one volume, and one tone.

All this to say, if it were me, I'D GET THE SQUIER.

These old MIJ Fender and Squier basses were built so well. They feel so good. They are a joy to behold and as time goes by, they appreciate. I bet this P bass would rival even the best of what Fender (and likely, some of the boutique clones) are doing to this day.
The L2000s to me (and I've had many) don't really light my fire. And if you know me, I'm far from a "purist" who complains that the options are too much. I like a lot of the concepts in these, but never honestly enjoyed the end result.
YMMV.

But since you asked, that is my personal take. I'd do MIJ Fender or Squier over G&L 100% of the time.

My wife’s 99 l-2000 weighs something like 8#.

Not all are heavy!

She used the front pu only, vol at 70% or so everything else WFO and active. Great gritty rock tone and very classic

Once you get L series and mfd a standard P sounds plodding and limited as all day at the DMV

OMG! G&L all the way. The Squire is not in the same league. I'll temper my response with the G&L being in good playing condition. No issues.
