Global Warming - It's Our Fault

This is the 5th IPCC report to come out and I've been waiting for it ever since I first read AR4 from 2007. :D

This is new:

IPCC climate report: humans 'dominant cause' of warming

The previous report attributed virtually all of the warming during the 20 century to human activity and considered natural forcings (causes) to be negligent. If this report concludes that humans are the dominant cause rather than the only significant cause then this is something of a backtrack. :eyebrow:

I'll be going through AR5 as soon as I can and see what the specifics are.

Sums it up for me.

And to say conservatives don't give a damn about the planet and liberals are all tree hugging planet saviours is a lot of hot air. There is a strong movement by MANY conservatives who want to practice clean earth and conservation strategies, but not because we're in eminent threat of doom, and not because a vocal majority in government want to mandate it, but because it's the right thing to do. There's no need to lean on us with pseudo-science, reams of new laws, and scare tactics.

Sorry...so are you suggesting this latest report is 'pseudo-science'?

The evidence keeps accumulating and climatologists are, to my knowledge, undivided on the issue of man-made climate change is in effect yet so many people still just don't want to see what is going on with our planet. It's scary.

I was in the Rocky Mountains with a very, very pretty woman. She was telling me a story; something about how someone said something, or something. She was saying something that sounded like something, or something, and finally, she confronted me.

"You're not LISTENING to me!" she insisted, insistently.

She had me. There was no chance at all I had been listening to her. I tried to play it off, by telling her the honest truth.

"I'm sorry. My mind wandered. I was thinking about how naked your ankles are, and how close they are to that pile of rocks, and how rattlesnakes live in piles of rocks like that, and I was concerned that one might bite you."

This was the honest truth. Now it is up to you to figure out why I posted that particular non-story on this particular thread.

I'm thinking it matters not in the big scheme of things as George Carlin appears to be correct on a number of points. It's always "our fault" with this current fear-maker. When I was a teen it was global cooling and a new ice age that drove environmental items sales. We've come full circle on BIG CRISIS PROBLEM but planetary cycles favor the Ice Age thing.

All of the natural, normal causes of climate(the sun, volcanic activity, sub-ocean floor activity, etc) appear to negate and very much out-weigh man's egotistical attempt to take blame or control the weather. The sun(thermonuclear-event-in-a-ball) and volcanoes and ocean floor vents do not accept NOX, CO2, heat, or other pollutant reduction techniques or man-made laws.

It would be very bad for us if trees decided O2 was a toxic pollutant and needed to be sequestered or reduced OR if we cut CO2 enough to affect O2 production by nature.

My 2 cents.

Something I learned that is interesting to me:

Landfills are good for slowing climate change. They're carbon sinks. In other words, the more carbon is locked up in landfills, the less of it is in the air (in the form of CO2).

So should we recycle or not?

/mind**** :D

The planet has been warming and cooling on is own since the beginning. In the 70's it was "global cooling". Now it the other side of the coin. It's whatever fits their agenda at the time. And Al Gore invented the internet.:D

And how did you know the historical temperature levels? Faith in science and scientists. Yet you doubt them on an issue that's been selectively politicized.

Hint: If you and I are aware of historic climate change, I would imagine the experts devoting their lives to studying it would be aware of that too.;)

Global Warming - It's Our Fault

What I've discovered from reading the last report AR4 from 2007, is that the hard science shows only that about half (1/3 to 2/3) of the warming during the 20th century is attributable to human activity. This necessarily means that the other approximate half is due to natural causes.

However, AR4 takes a bit of liberty with the hard science in its own report and surmises that virtually all of the warming can be attributed to human activity - on the basis that it's better to err on the side of too much blame than not enough.

The good news is that assuming half of the warming is naturally caused, then random chance should result in part of the warming trend reversing. Still, that leaves the human caused portion to steadily increase the temperature of the climate over the next few centuries, but only to a degree about half of what the report concludes, based on the exaggerated numbers.

This is about 1.0-1.5 degrees C and is certainly reason for concern and must be dealt with on an international scale. It is not cause for the panic perpetuated by some of those who take the exaggerated numbers (2.0-4.5 degrees C) as if they were the result of hard science.

I can provide somewhat detailed explanations regarding the science behind the report and the assumptions made for anyone who cares enough to ask about specifics. It helps to read the report first.

I'm guessing either many of you do not read any actual news or many of you are currently trying to do some spin doctoring. You are all aware that the earth hasn't done any warming since this whole fear mongering UN BS started right? And that the Antartic Ice shelf is actually growing. And that polar bears are not going extinct, in fact their numbers are the largest in recorded history?

Here you go Floyd. Stop reading political editorials for your science information.

“…the seeming paradox of Antarctic ice increasing while Arctic ice is decreasing is really no paradox at all,” explains Climate Central’s Lemonick. “The Arctic is an ocean surrounded by land, while the Antarctic is land surrounded by ocean. In the Arctic, moreover, you’ve got sea ice decreasing in the summer; at the opposite pole, you’ve got sea ice increasing in the winter. It’s not just an apples-and-oranges comparison: it’s more like comparing apple pie with orange juice.”

Satellites measure Antarctica is gaining sea ice but losing land ice at an accelerating rate which has implications for sea level rise.

"Antarctic sea ice hasn't seen these big reductions we've seen in the Arctic. This is not a surprise to us," said climate scientist Mark Serreze, director of the NSIDC. "Some of the skeptics say 'Well, everything is OK because the big changes in the Arctic are essentially balanced by what's happening in the Antarctic.' This is simply not true."

Greenland’s ice added six times more to sea levels in the decade through 2011 than in the previous 10 years, according to a draft of the UN’s most comprehensive study on climate change. Antarctica had a fivefold increase, and the UN is raising its forecast for how much the two ice sheets will add to Earth’s oceans by 2100.

If you were that skeptical about all science, that'd be reasonable. But you undoubtedly accept the vast majority of scientific positions. You trust that our cameras don't steal your soul, or that jet planes are witchcraft. You type your responses on a series of electronic devices using ones and zeros, satellites and processors synchronized throughout land and space. You take it for granted until it perhaps might conflict with your perceived financial interests. Doesn't that strike you as a conflict of interests?

No sir. It doesn't. I can prove most of what you listed myself with my limited scientific background. However, not only can I NOT prove global warming, but the most noted scientists of our generation can't either.

Let me break it down again........ slowly.

I am a fairly young guy (only 42). And in the span of MY LIFETIME we have gone through several notions on the subject.

Late 70s - Global Cooling - We were polluting the planet so badly that we were literally blocking out the sun with our smog.

90s (at least in the media... perhaps a bit earlier in the scientific community) Global Warming - We were polluting the planet so badly that we were trapping heat underneath the layer of crud we created in the sky (yes, way over simplified).

Few Years Ago - It was discovered through emails between college professors that much of the fright stirred up by the scientific community was simply MADE UP.

Just days ago - It was RELUCTANTLY released, and admitted to, that there hasn't been ANY global warming in over SEVENTEEN YEARS. (That is pretty much the entire span of the global warming scare.)

So, I'll put it back to you. Why are you so easily convinced that the "science" IS TRUE? WHY do you believe it? Are YOU a scientist?

So, to your point, I lump the belief that global warming is occurring at all, and that it is man made, right in with your list of scientific boogey men. You may as well be telling me that my TV actually has Dora the Explorer inside it and she is putting on a play for my kids.

This bears repeating (pun intended).

Lots of misinformation in your post. Assumptions, half truths, and conjecture paraded as fact.

Global Cooling Myth in the 70's
Many claim that in the 1970's all scientists believed the earth was cooling. Factual examination of the controversial report reveals that there was a consensus. The consensus was we don't know enough yet. The confirmation of the Milankovitch cycles indicated that we were to begin a cooling phase, the introduction of industrial greenhouse gases indicated we could interrupt the natural cycle. More study was needed.

http://www.skepticalscience.com/Climategate-CRU-emails-hacked.htm
A number of independent investigations from different countries, universities and government bodies have investigated the stolen emails and found no evidence of wrong doing. Focusing on a few suggestive emails, taken out of context, merely serves to distract from the wealth of empirical evidence for man-made global warming.

http://www.skepticalscience.com/cherrypicking-guide.html
Cherrypicking is the practice, widespread amongst climate change contrarians, of carefully selecting particular points in the noisy short-term climate datasets and using them to show 'trends' that are not representative of the true situation. The huge global surface air temperature spike that accompanied the monster El Nino of 1997-98 is thus chosen as the starting point for the "no warming in 17 15 16 years" that you may read in internet comment-threads below climate stories (the number varies, apparently at random, from commentator to commentator). This year we have seen the Arctic sea-ice melting season once again reported by contrarians as a recovery, although as the graph below, from the National Snow and Ice Data Center, clearly shows, there have been a number of 'recoveries' in previous years too. The long-term trend, as shown by the dotted trendline, is downwards.
