Gnomeratron VTF - a nasty muff with blend: prototype review

I want to keep the numbers accurate to their production, honestly. That's probably the only thing I'm picky about.

So, two things. 1) I'm a moron. My PM box was full, so I cleared it, and totally forgot to write down what you guys wanted your pedals labelled as.

2) Here's a gut shot:

I'm changing the socket setup. I'm going to move them to a small bank off to the side, with wires coming from the switches. The reason is, while it's totally doable, the current configuration is WAY too cramped. It won't be any more complicated-- and it'll be a billion times easier to get to.

And yes, that's a 2 conductor mic cable used between the jacks.
 
Ok, PM sent. I've decided to go with the standard set of diodes. As tweakable as this thing already is I surely don't need a whole bunch of diode options to do my head in with!!


EDIT: Maybe I do want a whole bunch of diode options though... can you explain this in really simple layman's terms how it works? I've read the thread numerous times but I'm electronically illiterate. Not the whole process, just the diodes themselves, and more how to change them I guess...

Modding, mostly. Started with basses, then moved to pedals. I do a lot of mods to Devi Ever pedals (less these days, since I need to focus on getting my own pedals out).

The only kit I've built is a GGG Brassmaster. The VTF kinda came from that, except I decided to use the two-stage fuzz circuit (Big Muff) for its versatility. Building them came from the fact I didn't have anything going and, well, people wanted them! So I refined it, Jrmy made some awesome graphics, and yeah.

To learn about the stuff, I looked up what was in these pedals and how they work. Unfortunately, most pedal-related sites don't tell you any of that. It's just "This is louder" or "This biases the transistor", without explaining what that even means. So you have to learn about the parts individually, in a context not related to guitar pedals THEN figure out what they're doing.

Sorry for the sort of non-answer. I literally just got curious, and learned this stuff. Kits will teach you to solder, but not why the parts go where they go, so I just use kits to get pedals I want for cheaper. (Of course, learning to solder and wire is SUPER important, but you can learn that modding too).

Anywho, I'll post a photo of the new diode sockets once the nail polish dries. ^_^
 
Yeah thanks, I've read that about a dozen times already.

So there are two diodes in total used at any one time? Or are there four? I think I got confused somewhere along the line with some other info I read later in the thread and in a PM.

Two. The diodes just change the character of the clipping stages. Imagine the pedal as a pedalboard within itself, but you can't turn anything off. It would look like this:

Clean boost > Distortion > Distortion > EQ

The two distortion sections are what the diode switches are connected to. They give you 3 options each. In the middle, the distortion sections don't have any clipping diodes to create distortion, so the pedal is literally just 3 boosters in line. Of course, it still distorts-- because that's more than you can possibly cleanly boost.

If you switch the diode 2 switch to one side, it engages clipping diodes. So that booster becomes a distortion box. Flip it to the other side, and it engages a different set of clipping diodes, which either clip (distort) the signal more or less depending on which diodes you've chosen.

Diode 1 has the same function-- except it works on the first clipping (distortion) stage.

Did that make any sense?
 
Yeah, that's clearer to me now. So essentially you can have 6 different tones just within the switches alone?

Yes. But, I think there would be more than 6 options from those two switches. My math might be off, though.

It's the weird little thing on the right corner with the stuff coming out of it.

I've used it, and it's pretty easy to get the diodes in and out. It could be hard to get to one in the middle sometimes, but that's the only real issue I see.

The order of the sockets go in order from left to right. So the first two are for the first switch, and the second two are for the second switch.
