I have a starburst finish Godin Shifter that I would like to sell because I have 4 basses and I am just a beginner. It's in excellent shape rarely been played because I am a beginner so it's only been through lessons and some practice. When I say excellent I mean it and there are no scratches etc. I am working so I can't take pictures now but would be glad to provide them.

The Starburst finish sold for $995 new and it includes the Godin gig bag. I would like to sell it for $700. I am in the Los Angeles area if anyone is local otherwise contact me and I will be glad to provide more information. I am a relative beginner so I can't answer many technical questions but it has a "shifter" switch that is 5 way and offers various sounds including the P-bass, J-bass among others. It's approximately 1 1/2 years old and "driven by a little old lady." PM me if interested.

Hi:

Sadly, my Godin BG-IV with EMG's has developed a twist, and I cannot get a luthier to give me a fret job because of it. They would need to plane off too much wood and can't guarantee it won't twist again

I've contacted Godin (my luthier too), but since they haven't made them for years, they don't have any spares (they do have a five string <sigh>)

Anyone know of a used neck (or a beater bass sitting around to be sold for parts or as is)?

I know, not much chance, but this bass has been my go to bass
for folk/bluegrass and my jazz style basses ain't cutting it

It seems that only Fenders are ubiquitous enough to have a large selection of parts (like necks) available for replacement purposes.

If I was going to replace a BG-4, I would consider:

- another BG4 (they do come up on the used market around the $400 mark
- a Godin Freeway passive (passive P/J)
- a Godin Freeway Active (mahogany body, soap bars, nice warm and dense tone. I have a Freeway 5 and like it a bunch except my particular example happens to weigh a ton.

All of these choices are quite different in terms of configuration but have the benefit of the same ergocut neck profile, if that's important to you. The Freeways will also be a bit less "modern" sounding than your BG4.

The Freeway has a very different feel, the neck doesn't have the same shape at all. I like them, but honestly they don't have the same feel... not as "fast" if you see what I mean.

How about a Shifter?

Otherwise, another BG4 could be a good idea. Mine is still going strong, no problem at all.

I actually already have another Godin BG-IV, one that I modified with two of Fred Hammons "Dark Star" Hagstrom bisonic reissue pickups with a Noll two band preamp. It sounds fantastic,
but more of a "in your face" Rickie 2001 sound. I would hate to steal the neck to restore my EMG BG-IV.

If anyone sees a used BG-IV, please forward the URL, that seems
to be the best approach. All the newer Godin necks will not fit
on the BG-IV neck pocket

I guess I should qualify by saying that my experience with the comparisons between Freeways and BG's is with 5 strings primarily. They are the ones I have personally owned. I can say that for me Godin and Lakland 5 string necks both feel like "home" to me. My Freeway 5 Active has a Very nice, fast and comfortable neck. If it weren't so heavy it would be one of my main players

I think the difference could be front to back profile. The BG could be a bit more "D" shaped and the Freewway more "C" shaped.

Shifters appear to have the same necks as the Freeways and in-hand comparisons lead me to believe that they're identical. But again I'm talking fivers.

It's all settled then, you definitely know your BG's. A couple of weeks ago I was playing drums in church and the bassist had an older BGV with the EMG's. Hearing him made me want to have my BG-V back again. The tone was great coming out of that thing. When playing drums I primarily listen to where the bassist is playing. That day I was also listening to what the bassist was playing as well.:D

I'm a fan of two band. My Sadowsky RV5PJ has made me a believer.

Most of the Godin employees I speak with say Go-Dang...but I think that's a French/Italian accent thing.
It is actually pronounced like you were going to say go-Dang but leave the G off at the last second

That's the simplest way I've seen yet of explaining this French vowel. Like "ang" but without pronouncing the "g".

I grew up in Montreal. For the true linguistics nerd there's also a bit of hybrid weirdness to this pronunciation. The vowel is like a combination of "ay" and "uh".

Don't get it? Fuggetaboutit. Jay Stevens explanation is more than adequate and if you master it French Canadians won't roll their eyes behind your back when they hear you say it like that.

I once asked my Godin artist rep who made their pickups and he said "they have a guy"
Occasionally they use seymour (and it usually says it on the top of the pickup), but on one of my guitars the pickups are G&B
I would assume that's who's manufacturing them to Godin's specs.

My Shifter 5 Classic was lonely for some Canadian company so I got it a companion.

I had to place a couple of sacrificial treasures up on the Craig's List altar to make this happen and am I ever glad I did.

This A5 Ultra is a little unusual in that it came with big honkin' elephant ears tuning gears.

It's a brand new bass. Godin shipped it like this but it's the only A5 I've seen with these tuners. Doing a Google image search, I only see one in the search results...mine, from the images (of my A5) at the dealer where I bought it.

I love the gears and it's a total keeper but it won't fit in the standard A4/A5 case because of the extra width of it's ears. Does anybody in here have one like this? Any suggestions on a hard case that would give it a nice snug fit but also accommodate those ears would be much appreciated. I've had it less than 24 hours now and am bonkers in love already. Ok, now how to scrape up enough dough to get it a Roland GR-55? Hmmmm. :ninja:
