Following up on my own message here just in case anybody is interested. I've been told by a Godin Rep that the larger tuning gears on my new A5 Ultra (see photo in original post) are actually a design change for the 2013 models. One that gets a big thumbs up from me I might add. Nothing wrong with the old tuners but I personally just love these on this bass. Caveat: if you get a 2013 A5, it won't fit in the case that sells from most major vendors as the "Godin A4/A5" case because the headstock is too wide with these tuners on it. The A4 might fit, I can't be sure but regardless, a new case for the 2013's should be forthcoming in the not too distant future.![]()
Very interesting... I just put Hipshot Ultralite elephant ear tuners on my Shifter Classic. It would have been nice if it just came with elephant ear tuners, to begin with...though I can't complain about having Hipshots, at this point.![]()

Hi:
I have two Godin BG-IV, this one pictured
(with Fred Hammon Dark Star DS3) pickups
and a Noll two band preamp, and a black
stock BG-IV with EMGs.
Love em both, for different reasons. The EMG
Godin gives me the best lounge room sound out of my
SWR Baby Blue with LDS long throw 8's, while
the Dark Star equipped unit sounds great turned
up through my bigger amp setups
I also have a Sadowsky Standard Jazz 4 and
an Alembic Rogue, and they mostly sit in their
cases (the latter for recording only, the Sadowsky
for big stage gigs). The Godin's sound great, have
that nice P-bass neck width, and if they get thrashed
I can always buy another <grin>

I'm not sure why the a4 has such hot output, and I agree that it is sometimes a hassle. I don't have a problem with feedback, but even at low volume, it is the most difficult part of playing the instrument live.I just got my fretless A4 today. It's fun. My question is: Is everyone's gain this hot? Mine has a really hot output and is very susceptible to feedback. It's fun to play with the feedback and all, but this doesn't seem quite right. I'm guessing there's a trim pot in one of the cavities - I haven't opened it up to look.
This thing is alive. It has a dead-ish spot on the low D on the G string, but I don't really think that matters too much. It's just another facet of its character. It's got a lot of it.
It's really got a lot of voices depending on whether you pluck at the neck or at the bridge, use a pick or fingers or the meat of your thumb. It's pretty amazing.
I blame this one on the Talk Bass community, BTW: I was browsing the site two weeks ago Saturday and there was a thread about acoustic basses. I've been dreaming of an A4 fretless for quite a while. I knew It'd be quite a while before I could buy a new one and I've never seen one used, so I hit eBay and there it was.
Honestly it's not exactly what I expected. It's sort of like meeting a pen pal face to face or honeymoon night in an arranged marriage. I hadn't played one before and I'm going to have to take a bit of time to get to know it.
