Going for walks, seeing some cool cars.

I just noticed this beauty a few blocks from my house.
Is this a Ford Fairlane?

Love that Deluxe Coupe.

The Torino gives me nasty flashbacks to my stepfather's car, which was I think a couple of years older, had more doors, and was a different color. It also had a fruitcake in the trunk, which he discovered in about 1983. He remembered then that he had thrown it in the trunk of the Torino after finding it in the trunk of a previous car, which he was selling. When he found it, we made him taste it first. After 24 hours he still wasn't dead, so I had a bite. It was the best fruitcake I'd ever had, which admittedly is not saying much. Who knew that Torino trunk-aged fruitcake was the best kind?

Oh trust me, it's true.

He also had an old Econoline camper van, which my friend Amy called "The Contraption." There's no better way to describe the thing, and no need to elaborate I'm sure. This was really the best and final word in automotive naming. When I was, to my mortification, driven around in the thing, the song that was always going through my head was

It went zip when it moved
And bop when it stopped
And whirr when it stood still
I never knew just what it was
And I guess I never will.

He sold it at some point, probably because he never used it for its intended purpose and my mother wouldn't allow two rattletraps of his in the driveway, especially since I was rapidly approaching driving age by the third year of their marriage. He sent it and the Torino to unsuspecting victims, and bought a 1963 Chevy pickup that was the color of a dirty pig, had approximately as many speckles, and did not run too well. The engine transplant was decent I guess. It was three speed on the column with no synchros, and also no second gear. You couldn't shift into first except at a dead stop, and for reasons I cannot comprehend if you made the attempt to do so you had to stop and fiddle with the carburetor. The fact that second gear was nonexistent was a true problem in my hilly town. I either had to stop at the base of every hill or get a tremendous run at them in third. I will admit that I felt like a total badass in the high school parking lot. I went to the school on the rich side of town, and my peers had brand new RX-7s and Subarus and Volvos, and here I had this enormous bashed up hideous pickup with no power brakes no power steering no second gear....

At least it wasn't The Contraption. And at least it wasn't the Torino, although that fruitcake would have been enough to keep all of us drunk for as long as it lasted.
