Going in the studio.. having second thoughts.

Speaking as an engineer, this guy is getting in the way of the process. The main object of any session is to get the sound that the client(you) want!
If I were you, I would have a private conversation with the engineer, just you and him, and say that you prefer using your setup. That is what I ALWAYS do for any given band. The only time that alternatives are offered is if there is a problem with the player's setup. There is no reason to get a confrontational tone with him. I would just say that you have given it some thought and that you would like to use your setup. That should be the end of the conversation.
I would also let the rest of the band know before you get to the session that you intend to use your rig.

I'd have to agree, and to take the point a step further, the ideal (for me and most musicians I've worked with) is the engineer is there to do just that--sound engineer the recording. You have sounds in your head, he does everything in his power to get them tracked and make them happen.

Each and every time I have encountered an ENGINEER who thinks he is a PRODUCER, ARRANGER, or MANAGER, I've had this problem. Those are separate entities. If the band wants to produce and arrange the music, you need to draw the line before the knob twiddler takes over your project against your wishes.

And yeah, these self-appointed engineer/producer/arranger types are always giant arrogant PITA's.

I feel for the OP and hope he can get his band's support here. Everyone deserves to be happy with and proud of a studio achievement.

Well said! I guess when you think about what an 'engineer' means/does that makes perfect sense. An engineer is someone who makes or designs a specific something for a customer. No difference when comparing a mechanical or structural engineer to a sound engineer. Say you were designing a home....an engineer would take your thoughts and ideas and make you a blue print/drawing out of them. Same thing here. Engineer should be taking YOUR ideas and thoughts and making you guys a blueprint for success. If he's trying to play any other role than he is impeding your success.

OP: FWIW: Personally I wouldn’t hire a so called engineer that insisted on pre processing my bass signal with a undoable Sansamp rather than re-doable DAW EQ and plugs. I have the feeling that this isn’t really a cutting edge studio - out of curiosity, what preamps and microphones does the engineer/studio have available?

+1
Been there and done that when I first put together my studio.
No do-overs for stuff processed before tracking.

These days I either run bass into the recorder first and aux send it to the amp,
or at least line out the amp to the recorder.

UPDATE!

This is good. The other guys had been thinking about my dilemma too. I had no idea. Gung-Ho Guitarist is all about me getting the recording done the way i want.

I think the engineer was just being lazy when we had the initial discussions, I just confirmed that i will be able to do 3 signals.

I'm glad i voiced my opinion, i should've said something sooner to get my mind at ease. We begin tracking tomorrow afternoon. I will post an update to that when i can.

Thanks for all the advice everybody!
