If no one has suggested this yet, ask to have both a Sans Amp and the Streamliner DI recorded. Then pick what works best, or mix. Easy.

I'd have to agree, and to take the point a step further, the ideal (for me and most musicians I've worked with) is the engineer is there to do just that--sound engineer the recording. You have sounds in your head, he does everything in his power to get them tracked and make them happen.
Each and every time I have encountered an ENGINEER who thinks he is a PRODUCER, ARRANGER, or MANAGER, I've had this problem. Those are separate entities. If the band wants to produce and arrange the music, you need to draw the line before the knob twiddler takes over your project against your wishes.
And yeah, these self-appointed engineer/producer/arranger types are always giant arrogant PITA's.
I feel for the OP and hope he can get his band's support here. Everyone deserves to be happy with and proud of a studio achievement.
OP: FWIW: Personally I wouldnt hire a so called engineer that insisted on pre processing my bass signal with a undoable Sansamp rather than re-doable DAW EQ and plugs. I have the feeling that this isnt really a cutting edge studio - out of curiosity, what preamps and microphones does the engineer/studio have available?
The pro studio should be able to offer you three tracks. Sans amp, direct out on the streamliner, and a mic'd cab.
UPDATE!
This is good. The other guys had been thinking about my dilemma too. I had no idea. Gung-Ho Guitarist is all about me getting the recording done the way i want.
I think the engineer was just being lazy when we had the initial discussions, I just confirmed that i will be able to do 3 signals.
I'm glad i voiced my opinion, i should've said something sooner to get my mind at ease. We begin tracking tomorrow afternoon. I will post an update to that when i can.
Thanks for all the advice everybody!

So talking works. Good to know!
I wonder if i can get him off the "big guitar sound" and let me do that. More fuel for my fire i guess!![]()
