It really depends. I have gold hardware on my Carvin LB-70, but that is the only one that does. I liked the look of the gold hardware with the blue. All my other basses have chrome. I have a kit I will be building that will have black hardware.

i voted "conditional" --- i like it on the condition that it's on your ax and not mine!

I hadn't considered that conditional status, but agree with you.

I'm not a fan of gold. I'd like to have black but I liked my Squier Musicmaster so much that it was the basis for work I did on my Fender for upgrades and couldn't find black. Plus the chrome goes with my like of things being "shiny."

I voted conditional. I’m generally not a fan of gold hardware, and planned to “blackout” the USA Cirrus 5 I recently picked up, but gold hardware (bridge and tuners, not knobs) on the walnut bass is growing on me. Leaving as is for now.

I had a Yamaha bass with gold hardware back in the 90's. (about the same time when gold trim was available on certain autos)
The gold on the knobs wore off quickly and the bridge developed a tarnish over time.
I'm neutral in regards to gold hardware on an instrument.
If it looks good go for it.
If not, use chrome or polished metal hardware.
