I hate that feeling of violation. It kinda sucks that I have lived in "bad" neighborhoods most of my life, and am somewhat inured to it.
"Oh well, my car window is gone, bet ya $5 the battery and car radio are yanked".
When I was a kid someone broke into our house while we were at a friends for dinner and stole christmas. They stole the turkey, the pies, the presents, they even stole the tree! I mentioned this to my sister and she had completely forgotten until I reminded her! She is couple years younger but how do you forget when they stole xmass!
Sheesh, reminds me I need to get renters insurance.

wow, so much has happened in the past week. the long and short of it is the Raleigh Police Department rocks. but in addition to some fine detective work, there were a couple breaks in the case that were critical in arrests being made and recovery of property (particularly the bass).

1st off, the ring was brought down by a crime stopper tip. Thank you, whoever made the call. I owe you one.

2nd, the crook who stole my bass traded with a friend of his for a horrible acoustic guitar (which i was a little upset about. i mean, at least get something cool, you know??). then, he was robbed, too! when the police came to his house and took their statement, this kid came forward with the bass and said, "I'm pretty sure this is stolen. I traded an acoustic guitar for it and only want to get that back. Hopefully you can return it to its rightful owner".

WOW!

i do not know, and will probably never meet this kid, but i'm proud of him for doing the right thing.

our plasma TV is probably hanging on someone's wall broadcasting the Super Bowl halftime show. whatever. we can get another one eventually. but that bass is irreplaceable and thankfully, i now do not have to worry about even trying.

again, thanks to the Raleigh PD, the anonymous crime stopper, and my hero 16 year old who gave up the bass. and thanks to you all who came in with the support, advice and understanding.

my wife and i have mixed feelings about the intruders. on the one hand, they broke into our home (and several other homes), stole, destroyed, inflicted fear, etc. there's no justifying that. but on the other hand, the youngest was 16 and the oldest probably not much more than 18 or 19. i would refer to them as "kids", even though technically they are all considered adults in NC.

my point is, we kind of feel sorry for them. they stole food, for crying out loud! and they're obviously not too bright, trading my bass for some no-name acoustic 6 string with missing bridge pegs...

my hope is that whatever happens to them punishment-wise, when it's all said and done, they would use their 2nd chance and not go back to stealing. i had people looking out for me when i was that age, which is probably the only reason i'm not in their proverbial shoes. "There, but for the grace of God, go I", and all that.

we had a security system installed 2 nights ago, which totally sucks: all the beeping. it's a pain, but necessary. also got a little safe for my pistol so next time, at least they will have to work a little to get at it.

have you all taken pictures of your basses, including identifying features such as SERIAL NUMBERS!?! off you go.

Watch Craig's list and eBay. I found one of my two stolen basses for sale about 5 months after they were missing. I had filed a police report. They were bought out of a pawn shop near my home by two different people. One person put one bass up for sale (both Craigs List and eBay) cause it was a really nice cheap find. I had filed a police report and the detectives went over and got my bass within 3 hours of me telling them I had seen it for sale. I got the bass back after attending a stolen property hearing. But one bass is still missing - an old Hofner Beatle Bass.

I know it hurts -- the items may turn up.

having been on the "wrong" side of the tracks, i can tell you 100% that no matter what small dinky town your in there is a way to get free food. they stole the stuff becuase they are criminals. if they just wanted food they would have looted the whole freezer, not just some buritos.

nail the little pricks to the wall. you worked hard to get your bass and other items they stole. they had enough foresight to use a car or van (im gonna assume that because they got your plasma) and they hit other places. not pressing charges just allows them to go and steal again. who cares if there kids, dont do the crime if you cant do the time.
