Good DI in the $100 range?

The DIrector is the original DI and basically the only DI I will ever use.
Also I recently heard about this new company called MIDfreq Audio which has really inexpensive audio gear.
I recently bought two cables and a DI and have never had any type of trouble with them.
Super clean but quite cheep as well.

I'm content with my Radial Stage Bug, for a fraction of the price of the JDI. Plenty small to fit on a pedalboard. I'm using the passive model with my Stingray.

If you're looking on the used market, Radial JDI or J48, Countryman Type 85, Whirlwind Hotbox (lower input impedance than either Countryman or Radial, but that's not the end of the world) would all be in your range and would all suit you just fine. I wouldn't want to use the IMP with a passive bass for recording, but for live it would be just fine. Cheap and effective!

For my needs, I think a standalone, dedicated DI box will be fine for now.

Yep, the DBX ones -- size may be a deal breaking downside for sitting on a pedalboard though. I compared the active one (DB12) to a Radial J48 on a few club gigs I was mixing, it held its own easily. Haven't tried the passive one though.

I am considering the classic DI. Take the time to read the sound on sound review that is linked from the classic DI page. It does a very favorable comparison to the Radial J48. At around $50 it is hard to ignore.

Look for a used Radial JDI (passive) or J48 (active). They can be found for $100 to $120.

For a passive bass on a budget, I'd go with a Radial Pro48 or an Audiopile.net LDB-101, both of which are active.

Unless all of your pedals are true bypass, you'll be hitting the DI with a buffered signal anyways. A passive DI will be just fine.

Good move. It's a great DI. And not to be too zen about your question, but your basses will sound exactly like they sound. The only coloration will come from EQ in the PA.

Aghh...I'm not sure about that.
As a DI dork I can you this.
The first DIs were basically reversed mike transformers and a lot where unboxed to boot. The first commercial direct boxes appeared in the early 1970s.
Its believe the Bo Hansen could have possibly created the first active DI in 1975 and He still has actually has a web page today.

There is an absolutely a difference with using a Jensen based passive dI and the other passive DIs.

I'm not sure why some folks skimp in this area...At a bigger gig, I would rather have a better quality sounding DI then Amp...This is what the folks coming to hear/see you are going to get their signal from.

It sounds pretty close to the Retrospec if I am brutally honest. Not next door close, but certainly in the neighborhood close. For instance, in a pinch, I have recorded both sides of my Warr guitar at the same time, one through each DI and then the same fx send for reverb. Totally useable. I can tell the difference if I solo each track, but not in a busy mix.

I never tried the Rertrospec, but would love to some day, I have a small collection of DIs and do a fair amount of playing on other peoples recordings where I'm always pulling something else out and done a fair share of A/B-ing...In a decent mix I can hear it the difference.
