Good Punk Bass?

QP's must have changed since I had them years ago. The once I had we're all fat warm and scooped.

This guys QP tone is pretty punk
I think both pickups full on, not loaded by pots or a cap they’d be pretty bright and aggressive.

Any bass with stickers and the 'F' word on it will do.
I was about to suggest a pawn shop special then beat it with a metal belt buckle and cover it with stickers so obscure only ten people in the world would know what they were about. Completely forgot about the F word though. Guess I’m slipping in my old age. :D

Really anything will work for punk. I've used a Squier P bass, an ESP five string, and an SX short scale modded jazz bass. I've even used flats in a punk setting, it's all about how you play. My simplest suggestion is to get a higher end used Squier P bass, drop a Seymour Duncan Quarter Pound in it, and pocket half your money. Throw some steel strings on it and you'll be pretty much have a perfect punk rock tone.

+1! A hotter wound pickup and a set of medium steels will bring the punk. I’d also suggest hex rather than round core steels for a little extra stiffness and tension since you’ll likely be playing it hard in a punk setting. So having a little less string ‘give’ is a plus for that style of playing. Rotosound 66s are a particularly good somewhat aggressive sounding string to go with if your hands can deal with their fairly rough texture. (You do get used to it eventually in case anybody’s wondering.)

Yep, I'd say another vote for the Precision bass...and if you rough it up, put some stickers all over it, don't change the strings often and above all else almost never tune the thing then you got a real punker! :bassist:

You raise an important point about stickers. A properly stickered punk bass should always look mysterious and slightly intimidating. It should convey a "hands off" message to anyone looking at it. I always roll my eyes whenever I see a post about someone applying stickers to a bass in order to make it a "punk" bass and then I see the photo and there is a giant Bud Lite decal next to a tie-dye peace sign and unfortunately, the message it sends is that the bass has never been any place more dangerous than a bedroom and the owner is maybe not a very good bassist.
