Good Punk Bass?

You're probably meaning punk in a different context but I remember 'real punk' 76/77 ......I had one of those crappy plywood short scale basses ( that people now pay stupid money on ebay for)

Two things. Sid could hold a bass like nobody's business, but he was a bass player like I'm a plumber.

Get a Starcaster or Coronado. Awful basses for punk, but smashing them up on stage will look spectacular.
Although the textbook answer would be P bass, I play in a punk band and most of the bands we play with, even big name acts, I see using a Squier Jazz. I was using a Schecter C-4XXX myself, but have since moved up to a Spector Forte 4 with Jazz pickups. Not because I think that's needed for punk rock, just because I can. And damn that thing rocks, the growl in the E string is so grindy I don't even need an overdrive for the grit. But I do use an over drive of course, and it is sick.

$850 is WAY too much to spend.
I think the Peavey T40 is the punkest looking bass.

In my punk days (old school) I used a Rick 4003 that was borrowed from a friend. I think a decent playing P bass would be fine. Punk is less about the equipment and more about the attitude one plays it with.
An old Peavey Fury or Milestone should be good. They're sturdy and will hold up to hard play. You want the plain and simple ones, not the glossy newer ones. Only a couple of hundred bucks usually.
Literally anything*, turn it up and play with a pick.
